Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This person won the 2009 Masters tournament and the 2007 US Open. Who is the angel that's gotten rather good at the game of golf?

Answer: Angel Cabrera

Argentinian Cabrera won the 2007 US Open by one stroke from Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods. Afterwards, he was famously quoted as saying:
"Well, there are some players that have psychologists, some have sportologists, I smoke."
His triumph at the Masters was even more nail-biting as he beat Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry in a playoff.
2. The quiz also includes fallen angels and this one provides a truly diabolical surname. His first name is Miroslav and he's played hockey for the Oilers; Islanders; Sabres; Penguins and Bruins. Who is he?

Answer: Satan

Right winger Miroslav Satan (pronounced "shah-tan") played over 1000 games in the NHL as well as appearing for Slovakia in the 1994 Winter Olympics. He won his first Stanley Cup, with the Pittsburgh Penguins, in 2009 at the age of 34.
3. An athlete with a biblical name might have been carried on angels' wings because he dominated the 400 metres hurdles event for over 10 years in the 1970s and 1980s. Which of the following is his name?

Answer: Edwin Moses

Moses was unbeaten between August 1977 and June 1987, during which he clocked up 122 consecutive victories, four world records and two Olympic gold medals. He would surely have taken a third had the USA not boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He still had enough in the tank to take a bronze at Seoul in 1988.

Both Owens (100m, 200m, Long Jump, 100m relay) and Edwards (triple jump) were Olympic gold medallists. Nehemiah (110m hurdles) would probably have also had a gold medal but for the 1980 boycott.
4. Christianity and sport are both in agreement about the importance of grace. In which sport was W.G. Grace an important early influence?

Answer: Cricket

"Dr. William Gilbert Grace was by common consent the greatest and most attractive figure that ever appeared on the cricket field. In his all-round mastery of the game, in the length of years during which he stood far above all rivals, in the amazing sum total of his cricketing achievements, and by no means least of all in the popular interest he excited, no cricketer, living or dead, has ever approached him, and it is doubtful if any ever will." Grace also had a darker reputation for gamesmanship and chasing money which led the cricket magazine Wisden to observe that "he was breathtakingly grasping when his eye caught the glint of hard cash."
5. Running back Adrian Peterson, of the Minnesota Vikings, went to Palestine High School. He has a nickname that is both colourful and religious. By which of the following is he known?

Answer: Purple Jesus

Peterson was the seventh overall pick in the 2007 season draft. In his first season with the Vikings he set an NFL single game rushing record of 296 yards against the San Diego Chargers. The Vikings' colours are purple, white and gold, if you were wondering how the nickname came about.
6. There are times when both religion and sport face the need for change. What is the name of the England international soccer player who bears the name of a religious reformer and was one of the first prominent black players in the game?

Answer: Luther Blissett

Blissett's career started with Watford in 1974 and he returned to them after a one season sortie into Italian football with A.C. Milan (1983-84). In the later years of his career, he also played for Bournemouth and Bury. He made just 14 appearances for England but did score a hat trick on his international debut, to put himself into a select group of players.

His name, bizarrely, has also become used worldwide as a pseudonym for anarchist groups and others. It is not clear how this came about although there is some speculation that it started in Italy and may, therefore, be linked to his brief playing career there.
7. Was there white smoke when baseball player Justin Pope was selected from the 2001 Amateur Draft? Which appropriately named team appointed him?

Answer: St Louis Cardinals

Pope spent his playing career in the minors. In 2003, the Cardinals traded him to the New York Yankees and, in 2010, he moved into coaching with the Staten Island Yankees.

It is the Catholic Church's College of Cardinals that is responsible for selecting a new Pope.
8. In the dark side in the form of New Jersey's NHL team. Which of the following names are they known by?

Answer: Devils

The team had previously played as the Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies. They moved to New Jersey in 1982 and the name was selected through a poll conducted in the local press. Other "devils" around the sporting world include the Manchester United soccer team in England ("Red Devils"), the Tasmanian Devils (Australian football), and the sports teams of Duke University and Arizona State University (respectively "Blue Devils" and "Sun Devils").
9. Here's a baseball player that spent a lot of time talking about heaven, as he became a popular early 20th century evangelist. Any of these names would be highly suitable, but which is the right one?

Answer: Billy Sunday

Born in 1862, Sunday was raised in an orphans home and spent eight seasons in the Major Leagues at Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. His greatest attribute was his speed and his ability to steal bases. Whilst with the Chicago White Stockings, he was converted to Christianity at the Pacific Garden Mission and this led to his "second" career as one of the best known evangelists in America.
10. There are many sportsmen and women with religious nicknames, but few that achieve the ultimate accolade of being nicknamed "God". Of these all-time sporting greats, which was the only one to bear the nickname?

Answer: Australian rules footballer Gary Ablett

Mohammed Ali was "the greatest", Wayne Gretzky was "the great one", and Pele was "The King". Anyway, Pele was already a nickname as the player's real name is Edison Arantes do Nascimento.

Ablett's career ran from 1982 to 1996 and he played all but six of these games for Geelong. He was particularly noted for his goal kicking and kicked 1030 goals in 248 games for the club.
