Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these fighters did not lose his Heavyweight Championship to Muhammad Ali?

Answer: Joe Frazier

While it can be argued these two men had the greatest rivalry in all sports history, Frazier and Ali sucessfully defended their championships against one another. Frazier in their first go, "The Fight of the Century" WD-15 (8 March 1971). Ali won their third go, the epic "Thrilla in Manilla" battle TKO-15 (1 Oct. 1975). Ali also won their second go WD-12 (no title at stake 28 Jan. 1974). Frazier lost his title to George Foreman on 22 January 1973.

However, that's another story!
2. Which of these fighters did the ledgendary "Brown Bomber" Joe Louis not sucessfully defend his title against?

Answer: Primo Carnera

When Louis fought Carnera, he was still two years away from winning the heavyweight championship. He defeated the "Ambling Ape" on 25 June 1935, stopping the Italian circus strongman in the sixth round.
3. How many successful title defenses did the ornery Sonny Liston make?

Answer: 1

The surly Liston was thought to be invincible after his lone successful title defense against Floyd Patterson in July of 1963. Cassius Clay would prove (in Liston's second defense) in Feburary 1964 that he was not.
4. After defeating Liston on 25 Feburary 1964, who did the fast-talking Cassius Clay, soon to be Muhammad Ali, make his first title defense against?

Answer: Sonny Liston

After their bout was postponed due to a hernia problem (with Ali), these two great fighters squared off in May 1965, with the slick boxing Ali winning in the first round.
5. James J. Braddock known as "The Cinderella Man", scored one of boxing's greatest upsets when he defeated California playboy then heavyweight champion Max Bear by decision in June 1935. In his first title defense two years later, he was KO'd by the sensational Joe Louis. How many fights did Braddock have after the Louis massacre?

Answer: 1

Braddock's lone bout after losing to Louis occurred 21 January 1938, when he out-boxed the durable Tommy Farr over 10 rounds, winning a split decision.
6. In his first title reign, George Foreman won and lost his heavyweight championship outside the United States. Did Jack Johnson have a simular fate?

Answer: Yes

The much despised Johnson won the heavyweight championship 26 December 1908, defeating Tommy Burns in Sydney Australia, and lost it to the "Pottawatomie Giant" Jess Willard in Havana, Cuba, 15 April 1915.
7. William Harrison Dempsey, a.k.a. Jack Dempsey, or "The Manassa Mauler", won the world heavyweight championship from Jess Willard on 4 July 1919. Who was his first title defense against.

Answer: Billy Miske

More than a year had passed (14 months to be exact) before Dempsey put his laurels on the line, but when he did, Miske was KO'd by the devestating punching "Manassa Mauler" in three rounds. The date was 6 September 1920.
8. Who was the referee for the second Clay-Liston bout?

Answer: Jersey Joe Walcott

Former heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott got distracted by Clay's (Ali) antics of running around the ring instead of staying put in the furthest neutral corner until Walcott summoned him out to resume fighting. When Walcott finally started to count, he was informed by timekeeper Nat Fleischer, that more than 10 seconds had elasped before Liston got up. Walcott then proclaimed Cassius Clay, soon to be Muhammad Ali, the winner and still champion.
9. Who was former heavyweight champion Ingemar Johansson's final opponent?

Answer: Brian London

On 21 April 1963, former heavyweight champion Ingemar Johansson appeared in the ring for the last time as a boxer (he refereed some). Johansson pounded out a unanimous 12-round decision over England's Brian London. Ingo was only 30 years old.
10. How many rounds was the fight between "The Pottawatomie Giant", heavyweight champion Jess Willard and challenger Jack Dempsey scheduled for?

Answer: 12

While four years earlier, Willard's victory over the besieged Jack Johnson was scheduled for 45 rounds (Willard won in 26). This championship bout was scheduled for only 12, with Dempsey winning after Willard's corner threw in the towel of surrender, after 3 rounds of battle.
