Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2001, Barry set a season record for hitting 73 home runs in the season. If Bonds never existed, who finished second, and would have been credited with winning the 2001 season home run title?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

McGwire hit only 29 in his final season in 2001. Bagwell hit 39 for the Astros, and Shawn Green of the Dodgers hit 49. Sosa's 64 home runs in 2001 made him the first player in history to hit 60+ home runs three times in a season.
2. In 1992, Bonds left the Pittsburgh Pirates to become a San Francisco Giant. If Barry never existed, who would have still been a Giant, and not moved to Pittsburgh?

Answer: Nobody. Barry signed with the Giants as a free agent

The other three were in the starting line-up in both the '92 and '93 Giant seasons. In October 1992, Bonds was given free agency status and signed with the Giants two months later.
3. If Barry never existed in baseball, who would have been the third player in history to hit 600 career home runs?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Regardless if Barry was ever born, Hank Aaron was the third player in history to hit 600, behind Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. Bonds was the fourth player to reach that milestone.
4. Barry Bonds won his first season MVP award in 1990 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. If Barry never existed, which National League player who finished second, might have won his first MVP instead?

Answer: Bobby Bonilla

Bonilla shared the Pittsburgh outfield with Barry from 1986-1991. Bobby finished second in the MVP voting, 119 points behind Bonds.
5. Barry Bonds was a first round pick and went sixth overall in the 1985 draft. Who was the next outfielder selected in the draft that the Pirates might have picked instead if Barry never existed?

Answer: Pete Incaviglia

The others listed all went in the 1975 draft, 10 years before both Bonds and Incaviglia were drafted and signed. Pete went eighth overall in the 1985 draft and was selected by the Expos. Without playing a game in Montreal, they traded him to the Rangers. Incaviglia's career spanned 12 seasons, hitting 206 home runs.
6. If Barry Bonds never existed, which pitcher would not be in the record books for giving up home run number 73 in 2001?

Answer: Dennis Springer

In the last game of the 2001 regular season, Dodger pitcher Dennis Springer dished up this 380 foot historical home run. In 2001, Springer pitched only 19 innings during the entire season. He retired after the 2002 season.
7. Barry won his first batting title in 2002 by batting a career high .370. If Bonds never existed, who might have won the batting who finished second?

Answer: Larry Walker

Walker of the Rockies batted .338 in the season to take the runner-up spot. This could have been Larry's fourth consecutive batting title.
8. In 2005, and if Bonds never existed, who would have still held the record for the most walks in a season with 170?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Bonds broke Ruth's season record in 2001 with 177 walks, then again in 2002 with 192, and yet again in 2004 with 232. The Babe set his record with the Yankees in 1923.
9. If Barry Bonds never existed, baseball's number of World Series home runs would be how many less?

Answer: 4

Barry appeared in only one World Series in 2002, which saw a West Coast series against the Angels. Barry hit four home runs and batted .471 in the four games to three loss to the Angels.
10. Who would have never been a Godfather had Barry never existed?

Answer: Willie Mays

Barry wore the number of Mays, 24, while he played in Pittsburgh. When Barry went to the Giants, 24 was retired in the name of Willie, so Bonds took the number 25.
