Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cecil Souders played his entire three-year NFL career with the Lions. What city was the team based in during his career?

Answer: Detroit

The Detroit Lions franchise was founded in 1930 in Portsmouth Ohio. They were known as the Spartans then. In 1934 the team moved to Detroit and was renamed the Lions. Souders played three seasons from 1947-49.
2. While he played his entire career with the Lions, Cecil Souders was drafted by another team. Which team did he almost become a native of?

Answer: Redskins

The Washington Redskins drafted Souders in the 25th round in 1945. He failed to make the team and signed with the Lions two years later. Souders was born in Ohio, the Lions were the closest to a hometown team he could play for in the 1940s.
3. Playing primarily as a lineman, Cecil Souders also lined up as a tight end on certain formations. How many career touchdowns did he have?

Answer: 1

Souders only caught 17 total passes in his career. During a 1947 game he caught a short pass and rumbled into the endzone for his first, and final NFL touchdown.
4. What college, located in the Buckeye State, did Cecil Souders play football at?

Answer: Ohio State University

The Buckeye State is Ohio, which is also where Souders was born. OSU's mascot is the Buckeye which should have served an another clue in the question. Souders wasn't highly sought after in the draft after he graduated, being drafted in the 25th round. He was cut from his team and spent two years out of football before getting another chance at the NFL.
5. Other than Cecil Souders, four other players born in the same small town played in the NFL during the 20th century. The other four players were Carl Kaplanoff, Bob Monnett, Truck Myers and Dick Schuster. Where were they all born?

Answer: Bucyrus, Ohio

Bucyrus is the largest city in Crawford County Ohio. The 2010 census showed a population of about 12,300 people in the 7.43 square mile city. The city calls itself "the Bratwurst Capital of America", and hosts an annual festival devoted to the German sausage.
6. After getting cut from his first NFL team (before ever playing a game) Cecil Souders went off to fight in WWII. In what branch of the service did he serve?

Answer: Navy

Souders served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-47 after he was cut from the Washington Redskins. Few records of his exact duties in the Navy remain. Sauders who lived into his 90s rarely spoke publicly about his time in the war.
7. During his time in college Cecil Souders played on an undefeated team. Did he win more than one national championship?

Answer: no

The OSU Buckeyes won the school's first football national championship in 1942 while Souders was a junior. The team went 9-0 that season. The team wouldn't win another championship until 1954.
8. In 2015 Cecil Souders became the "oldest living Lion" when what other former player died?

Answer: Mike Kostiuk

Among the options only Kostiuk played for the Lions. Kostiuk was 95 when he died. He had only played 6 games with the team in 1945. Kostiuk quit the team when he found a job that payed more than playing with the them. The Canadian-born player died of heart failure.
9. What sweater number did Cecil Souders wear during his career in both college and the NFL?

Answer: 66

Souders was primarily a lineman, so among the options 66 is the most likely choice. While it's not an enforced rule, there are certain numbers players generally wear based on their positions. Players wearing numbers outside of the normal range have to notify officials.

In the NFL 0 is not a legal number. 1-9 is generally worn by quarterbacks, kickers and punters.
10-19 is worn by quarterbacks, wide receivers, kickers and punters.
50-79 are worn by offensive and defensive linemen.
90-99 are worn by defensive linemen and defensive backs.

The standardized numbers were instituted in 1973, but were mostly followed for decades before that as well.
10. During his career with the Lions, Souders played in two Super Bowl games.

Answer: False

Souders played three seasons from 1947-49. The first Super Bowl wasn't played until 1967. A further hint for the answer here is that the Detroit Lions failed to make the Super Bowl even once during the entire 20th century.
