Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a form of inline skating?

Answer: Cross country

Inline skating can also include hockey, figure and marathons, and is now being included in some biathlons and triathlons. Aggressive skating is ramp skating and recreational is skating for fun.
2. Inline hockey resembles which other popular game?

Answer: Ice hockey

Ice hockey and inline hockey are quite similar, and many players alternate between the two.
3. Which of the following is an *unlikely* arrangement of wheels on an adult SPEED skate?

Answer: 4x 76mm wheels

The 2005 trend was towards the larger wheels, but because of their length, only four usually fit in a frame. The set with one smaller wheel is to accommodate the shape of the frame which in this case does not fit four 100mm wheels. 76mm wheels are too small for a speed skate and would usually only be seen on hockey or aggressive skates or speed skates for a younger skater.
4. The wheels on agressive or ramp skates are:

Answer: Smaller than the wheels on ordinary recreational skates.

Aggressive skates have the smaller wheels and shorter chassis to make them more maneuverable.
5. The numbers printed on the wheels of an inline skate represent what?

Answer: The diameter of the wheel and the hardness of the material

The hardness of a wheel (amongst other things) determines its performance charcteristics, such as how it sticks to the skating surface and the amount of friction created.
6. Why is it best to skate with your knees bent?

Answer: All of these

The best skating position is low with the knees bent. Speed skaters also aim to keep their upper body and head low. When you stand up, you lose all of these benefits, but especially stability.
7. Which of these is not part of a skate?

Answer: Universal joint

The bindings are to do up the boot, and most skates have at least one (on the ankle) but also more than one. The chassis holds the wheels and each wheel has an axle.
8. Hockey skates frequently have two wheels of one size and two wheels of a different size on each foot.

Answer: True

Many hockey skates have wheels of mixed sizes.
9. What do indoor inline hockey players hit with their sticks?

Answer: A puck

The teflon-coated puck slides freely on the floor, like an ice hockey puck.
10. Which of these companies did not make skating equipment in 2005?

Answer: Puma

Bont, Mogema, and Powerslide are some of the largest manufacturers of skating equipment and clothes worldwide.
11. What sits between the axle and the wheel to allow the wheel to roll freely?

Answer: Bearing

There is a great variety of bearing types and sizes, but all have the same function of allowing the wheels to roll. The less friction in the bearings, the faster the wheels roll.
12. What length is an inline skating marathon?

Answer: 42km

It's the same length as a running marathon, but completed much faster of course.
13. Which of these is a speed skating term?

Answer: Double-push

Double-push is a style of skating that maximises the amount of drive by using both the inside edge and outside edge of the wheel in each single push.
14. Which of these is not a way to stop when you are on inline skates?

Answer: Speed stop

Recreational skates often have a brake on one wheel, though speed, hockey and aggressive skates rarely do. T-stop is possibly the most popular way to stop, with the behind foot perpendicular to the front foot. A hockey stop is with both feet parallel and turned sideways to the direction of movement.

There is no such thing as a speed stop- in fact, it is a bit of a joke that the fastest skaters actually have no real way of stopping, usually just skating in a circle until they slow down, though a form of modified snow-plow is also popular, and at low speeds they can also reverse one foot and do a sort of circle on the spot.
15. Which of the following statements is true?

Answer: Inline skating can be fun and social

Inline skating is great for fitness, is generally a great social sport if you choose it to be but also great for those wanting to clock up some kilometres on their own. You can skate anywhere there is a suitable flat surface, from tracks in parks to rinks, basketball courts, even the family driveway. Specialised rinks are a great place to learn and practice in safety with a good clean surface to skate on, free of bumps and rocks, but many people clock up thousands of kilometres outside of rinks each year.

By the way, while the majority of skates have four wheels, some (mainly speed skates) have five and I have seen some speed skates for tiny tots with three wheels. I think you may have been given a clue here in question three.
