Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first motorcycle TT in the Isle of Man was held in 1907 on the St. John's course. It was later transferred to the mountain course. Which year did this take place?

Answer: 1911

The first race took place in 1905 in conjunction with the Gordon Bennett and Tourist Trophy car races. The Auto Cycle Union took over the organization of the races in 1911. The mountain course was also adopted in the same year.
2. Speeds increase year by year. Who was the rider that completed the first 100mph lap in 1957?

Answer: Bob McIntyre

Geoff Duke came tantalisingly close when he recorded a speed of 99.97 mph a year earlier.
3. Joey Dunlop was a legendary TT rider. He almost didn't make it to the races in 1985. Why was that?

Answer: He was shipwrecked

Joey and his friends were traveling to the Isle of Man from Northeren Ireland in a fishing boat which sank. Luckily they were rescued by the Portaferry lifeboat. The bikes were recovered from the wreck, and were able to compete in the races after an overhaul.
4. The highest point on the course is where it passes over the "mountain". What is the name of this mountain?

Answer: Snaefell

The summit of Snaefell is highest point on the Isle of Man at 2034ft above sea level. Conditions on the mountain section of the course can be very different from those at the start in Ramsey. This can often lead to delays in the race starts due to rain or mist while the riders are basking in sunshine on the start line.
5. How long is the modern TT course?

Answer: 37-3/4 miles

Incredibly, the fastest lap over the 37-3/4 mile course is an average of over 130mph.
6. There are several jumps on the course, but one is particularly famous over a small bridge in a village. What is its name?

Answer: Ballaugh

Ballaugh Bridge is a tricky jump on a bend into Ballaugh village. This is a popular vantage point for spectators due to the spectacular photo opportunities.
7. As it is run on public roads, there are many obstacles on the course. What obstacle do the riders encounter at the bungalow?

Answer: Tram tracks

The trams do not run on race days, but the tracks still provide one of the many obstacles to be found on a course composed of public roads.
8. Which manufacture formed their race team specifically to win the IOM TT races?

Answer: Honda

Honda made their first attempt in 1959. The first win was to come two years later. This was the first of many wins, which by 2009 totaled more than 180 spread over all classes of racing.
9. What do many riders traditionally do, which they believe brings them luck?

Answer: Say hello to the fairies at the fairy bridge

It always pays to be kind to the fairies and many riders visit the bridge to say hello and hopefully receive some luck in return. It may also be a good idea for tourists to drop by and pay their respects.
10. The entire event was canceled in 2001. What was the reason?

Answer: Foot and mouth disease outbreak in the UK

Agriculture is very important on the island, and it was decided that the risk of contamination from the UK foot and mouth outbreak was too great. As a result, the 2001 event was canceled as a safety precaution.
