Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although they played for various teams, Felipe, Matty and Jesus were teammates for a time. What is their last name?

Answer: Alou

The surname of the Alou brothers was actually Rojas. Alou was their maternal grandmother's surname and was a part of their full name. They chose to publicly honor her name. At one point during the 1963 season all three brothers occupied the outfield of the San Francisco Giants, the first trio of brothers ever to do so in the major leagues. Felipe went on to become a manager.

His son Moises also had a successful major league playing career.
2. Hank was a legend who broke a long standing home run record. His brother Tommie had a less distinguished but still successful career. What is their last name?

Answer: Aaron

Tommie was the younger brother of the great "Hammering" Hank Aaron. In 1969 the Aaron brothers became the first brothers ever to play in a league championship series as teammates.
3. Cal and Billy were the sons of another former baseball player named Cal. What was their last name?

Answer: Ripken

Cal Ripken Jr. is a Hall of Famer who played his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles. He also broke Lou Gehrig's long standing record of 2,130 consecutive major league games played - a feat many thought would never be surpassed. While Billy's playing career was far less distinguished than Cal's, he contributed to the game in many other ways, including serving as first base coach for the US team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
4. Don't pull out your hair trying to come up with which last name belonging to the brothers Jerry Jr. and Scott?

Answer: Hairston

Jerry Hairston Jr. and his brother Scott are third generation major league baseball players. They are the sons of Jerry Hairston Sr. and the grandsons of Sam Hairston. Sam began his career in the Negro League before signing with the Chicago White Sox where he played for one season in 1951. Jerry Hairston Sr. played in the major leasgues from 1973 to 1989. Jerry Jr. retired in 2013 after 15 years in the majors. Scott Hairston was still active through the 2015 season, but was released by the Chicago White Sox in March of 2016.
5. Lloyd and Paul were like poison to major league pitchers. What was their last name?

Answer: Waner

Known as "Little Poison" and "Big Poison" respectively, the Waner brothers were among the best hitters in the history of major league baseball. Lloyd finished his career with a lifetime batting aversge of .316 while Paul finished with a .333 lifetime batting average.
6. Livan and Orlando were not Hall of Famers, but they had a distinguished major league pitching career. What was the surname they went by?

Answer: Hernandez

Livan and Orlando Hernandez are actually half-brothers. Orlando was nicknamed "El Duque" (The Duke). Livan's actual surname is Carrera. Both were very successful major league pitchers.
7. It was Wilton's dream to play alongside his brother Vladimir. Thanks to a trade, that dream was finally realized. What is their last name?

Answer: Guerrero

When Wilton Guerrero was traded by the Dodgers to the Montreal Expos in August of 1998 it fulfilled a life long dream of playing alongside his younger brother Vladimir as a teammate. Born just a year apart, they grew up playing together in their native home of the Dominican Republic.
8. Greg was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot. His brother Mike also had a successful pitching career, though not as distinguished as Greg's. What was their last name?

Answer: Maddux

In addition to his Hall of Fame pitching career, Greg Maddux also won 18 Gold Gloves for his defensive play. Older brother Mike, while not as successful, pitched for several major league teams and was also a pitching coach for several professional teams after his retirement.
9. Gaylord and Jim were both All Star pitchers, but Gaylord's career was the most successful. What was their last name?

Answer: Perry

In 1982, Gaylord Perry became the 15th pitcher to win 300 games in his major league career. His older brother Jim was a three time All-Star and while his numbers did not approach the Hall of Fame stats of Gaylord, he did have a distinguished 16 year career in the major leagues. Gaylord Perry was known to employ the "spitball" - an illegal pitch that involves "doctoring" the ball.

He would neither confirm or deny his use of the pitch, but the reputation alone was an effective weapon in his arsenal.

His autobiography was fittingly called "Me And The Spitter".
10. Phil and Joe were both pitchers. Phil's 318 career wins earned him a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. What was their surname?

Answer: Niekro

The Niekro brothers were both very successful major league pitchers who specialized in throwing the "knuckleball", a pitch that can be difficult for hitters to pick up because it has no spin and can move in a different way than a regular pitch. It also requires very little effort on the part of the pitcher. The two brothers combined for a total of 530 career wins.
