Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first modern day (post-1920) player to steal 100 bases in a season?

Answer: Maury Wills

Cobb never stole 100 bases in a season. His 20th century record of 96 with the Tigers in 1915 would stay in place until Wills of the Dodgers stole 104 bases in 1962. Brock of the Cardinals would top that in 1974 with 118. Henderson broke Brock's record in 1982 with 130 thefts.
2. Lou Brock set a National League record by stealing 938 bases in his career. He stole 888 with the Cardinals, and 50 with which other team?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

Brock played in 19 seasons from 1961-1979. His first four seasons saw him wearing a Chicago Cub uniform in the outfield. In 1963, he stole 24 for his team high. He later stole 118 with the Cardinals in 1974.
3. Who was the first-ever American League player to steal home twice in the same game in 1912?

Answer: Joe Jackson

Although Cobb of the Tigers set a season record for stealing home eight times in 1912 and 54 over his career, he was not the first to pull it off twice in the same game. 'Shoeless Joe' was a Cleveland Nap (later Indians) in 1912. Joe would steal 35 bases in the season, and 202 over his 13-season career.
4. Before becoming a famous New York Yankee manager, Miller Huggins set a season record as a player for being caught stealing 36 times in 1914. Who came along and broke his record in 1982 by being caught 42 times?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

Henderson of the Athletics also set a record in 1982 for stealing 130 bases. One might figure with more attempts, the more he will be caught. This is valid except for Huggins. In 1914, he was caught 36 times while stealing only 32 bases in the season. Henderson went on to be the first to steal 1000 bases in a career, retiring with 1406. Rickey was caught stealing a career 335 times.
5. In early baseball in the 19th century, stolen bases were a very common item. How many times did speedsters steal 100+ bases in a season, in any league, total in the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s?

Answer: 13

The first player in baseball history to steal 100 in a season was Hugh Nichol in 1887. In early baseball, due to the restriction of pitching deliveries, runners had a greater advantage of stealing. Seven players stole 100+ bases in 1887 alone. Nichol was a Cincinnati Red Stocking in the American Association. He stole 138 bases in the 135-game season.
6. Which of the following had the lowest career stolen base success percentage?

Answer: Pete Rose

"Charlie Hustle" didn't mean that Rose had any serious speed issues. In 347 attempts, Pete stole 198 and was caught 149 times for a percentage of .571 in his career. Morgan stole 689 with a success rate of 81%. Schmidt retired with 174 and a 65% rating. Belle stole 88 bases for a 68%.
7. Dom DiMaggio of the Boston Red Sox set an American League record for the fewest stolen bases in a season while still leading the league. How many bases did he steal in that 1950 season?

Answer: 15

Dom, one of three baseball DiMaggio brothers, didn't burn any basepaths in his 11-season career. His 15 in 1950 was tops in the American League. His career high was 16 in 1942. Dom retired with 100 career thefts, leading his brothers on the basepaths. Vince stole 79 in his career, while brother Joe stole only 30.
8. Which speedster set a Major League record by stealing 50 consecutive bases in as many attempts before being caught?

Answer: Vince Coleman

Coleman of the Cardinals straddled the 1988 and 1989 seasons to establish this record. From that September to the following July, Coleman was a consistent thief. On July 28, 1989, Montreal Expo catcher Nelson Santovenia finally nailed Vince and the streak stopped. Vince would go on to steal third base after his next at-bat.
9. Attempting to steal home will instantly get a ballpark screaming, as it is a rare feat in baseball. Which of these former Yankee players did not steal home at least 10 times in their career?

Answer: Phil Rizzuto

The Babe stole home 10 times, Moriarty did it 11, and Gehrig topped them both by stealing home 15 times successfully. Rizzuto was not known for any speed, stole only 149 bases over 13 seasons, and stole home only one time.
10. In a record most likely to never be surpassed, George Gore of the Chicago White Stockings stole seven bases during one game in 1881. One other base stealer was able to tie this record in 1894. Who was this thief?

Answer: Billy Hamilton

In a game on August 31, 1894, Billy stole seven bases as a Philadelphia Phillie. It would be the final time that Hamilton would reach 100 thefts in a season. One of the greatest base thiefs of early baseball, Billy retired with 914 after 14 seasons, averaging 65 bases per season.
