In 1990, Barnes played in all 3 group games and scored a goal that was incorrectly ruled out for offside in the second round against Belgium before succumbing to a hamstring strain. He lasted only 45 minutes of the quarterfinal against Cameroon before being withdrawn, and didn't play again in the tournament.

By the time England next qualified for the World Cup, Barnes international career had come to an end.

In 1996, Barnes was again on the losing side as Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0, and his final FA Cup Final appearance also ended in defeat to Manchester United as he came off Newcastle's subsitute's bench for the last four minutes of the 1998 final.

The final straw for the Celtic board was a 3-1 defeat in the Scottish FA Cup third round to Inverness Caledonian Thistle (colloquially known as Cally), a team from the division below.

The defeat prompted one of the finest newspaper headlines of all time, "Super Cally go ballistic, Celtic are atrocious". Barnes was sacked the next day.
