1. Affirmed won the triple crown in 1978, beating the same horse in each of the three races. Which horse came in second each race?

Answer: Alydar

Alydar won 2 out of 6 races against Affirmed when they were 2 year olds. Alydar would make a better sire than Affirmed. Alydar would sire Kentucky Derby winners Alysheba (1987) and Strike the Gold (1991). Affirmed's offspring prefered turf races like Eclipse winner Flawlessly.
2. Who got second in the 1953 Kentucky Derby?

Answer: Native Dancer

Dark Star won the race by a head. It would be Native Dancer's only loss in 22 starts. The "Grey Ghost" would, however, be named co-horse of the year.
3. Secretariat was the first horse to run under two minutes in 1973. Secondplace also finished in under two minutes: who came in second in that race?

Answer: Creedmore

The first debry was run in 1875; Creedmore finished seocnd in 1876. The derby was still 1.5 miles unlike today's 1.25 miles. This distance was reduced in 1896 because it was felt that the distance for the 3-year-olds was too far for being so early in spring.
6. Who came in second to Citation in the 1948 Kentucky Derby?

Answer: Coaltown

Citation would go on to win the triple crown. He was the eighth horse to do it, and the second from Calumet Farms. Coaltown was from that same farm. Coaltown would be named horse of the year in 1949.

Answer: Lil E. Tee
