Answer: Michael Spinks

Spinks defeated Larry Holmes by decision in 1985. It was Holmes' 21 title defense before Spinks stopped him. Holmes was shooting for the victory to tie the great Rocky Marciano with a 49-0 record. It wasn't to be.
2. In addition to being known as 'The Greatest', Muhammad Ali had a nickname before he even became an accomplished boxer. What was that nickname?

Answer: The Louisville Lip

The nickname began as a 12-year old, when he (then Cassius Clay) wanted to learn how to box so he could "beat the kid that stole my bike". That unnamed thief may have been responsible for the creation of the greatest boxing champion of all-time.
3. In a World Lightweight Championship fight in 1972, who defeated Ken Buchanan to become the world champion?

Answer: Roberto Duran

This was the beginning of reign for Roberto Duran. He knocked out Scotland's Buchanan in the 13th round on June 26. Buchanan gained the crown in 1970 when he defeated Ismael Laguna.
4. What was boxing great Sugar Ray Robinson's born name?

Answer: Walker Smith Jr

Boxing Hall of Fame great Sugar Ray Robinson won his first 40 fights as a professional. His first-ever loss came by another Hall of Fame great, Jake LaMotta in 1943.
5. Jack Dempsey once set a record for knocking down an opponent seven times in one round. Which boxer tied this record in 1959?

Answer: Ingemar Johansson

Johansson met Floyd Patterson on June 26, and knocked Patterson down seven times in the third and final round. Ingemar won the fight.
6. Which boxing title holder was known as the 'Boston Strong Boy'?

Answer: John L. Sullivan

Sullivan allegedly showed up drunk for a match in 1892, and was not only embarrassed, but was pummeled. He retired shortly after. Sullivan's career record was 47-1-3, his only loss being on that fateful 1892 night. John L. was the first real American icon in sports. In retirement, he went on an anti-alcohol campaign for younger kids.
7. How many total fights did Muhammad Ali lose in his professional boxing career?

Answer: 5

Ali was the first boxer in history to regain the title three times after losing it. The five boxers that Muhammad lost to were Trevor Berbick, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Ken Norton, and Leon Spinks.
8. Jack Dempsey, 'The Manassa Mauler', would fight this boxer in 1927, which he lost the bout in what was called 'The Long Count' to which fighter?

Answer: Gene Tunney

Tunney was champion, and dominated the fight up to the sixth round. The seventh round brought all the controversy when Dempsey put Tunney on the canvas for the first time in his career. The 'long count' occurred because it was said that Dempsey did not go to a neutral corner, thus the count started over.

Historians have the count at 14 seconds before Tunney got up. Gene would go on to win the fight, the last professional fight for Dempsey.
9. In Thomas Hearns' first attempt to gain the Middleweight Championship, who did he lose to?

Answer: Marvin Hagler

Hagler stopped Hearns cold in the third round. Hearns would later go on to win the belt in 1987 against Juan Domingo Rodan of Argentina in four rounds. The WBC middleweight belt was later vacated by Sugar Ray Leonard after his win over Hagler.
10. In one of the most anticipated title fights in boxing history, which two met in the ring in March 1971?

Answer: Muhammad Ali - Joe Frazier

In this fight of Ali-Frazier I, Frazier knocked down Ali in the 15th round, then went on to win by decision. This led to Ali-Frazier II which Ali won, and to one of the greatest fights in boxing history, 'The Thrilla in Manilla'. Ali-Frazier III was held in the Philippines in 1975, with Ali walking away as the winner. With no theatrics, these two men truly hated each other.
