Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did the Toronto Maple Leafs receive in exchange for winger Russ Courtnall on November 7, 1988?

Answer: John Kordic

Courtnall had 82 goals for Montreal in 250 games. They later traded him to Minnesota for accomplished sniper Brian Bellows. Kordic had but 10 goals for the Leafs but had 446 penalty minutes in 104 games.
2. Chicago traded this player for Stephane Beaureguard and a 4th Round pick on August 7, 1992:

Answer: Dominik Hasek

Hasek has won the Vezina Trophy 5 times through 1999, and the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 1998 and 1999. Ironically, with the 4th round pick Chicago selected perrenial 30-goal scorer Eric Daze.
3. Pittsburgh swapped this player for Alek Stojanov March 20, 1996:

Answer: Markus Naslund

Naslund led the Vancouver Canucks in scoring in 2000-01 and was named their captain prior to that season. The pugilistic Stojanov had 2 goals in 45 games for Pittsburgh, but was sent to the minors in 1997....
4. What NHL player has been traded for one dollar?

Answer: Ray Sheppard

On July 9, 1990 the Buffalo Sabres traded him to the N.Y. Rangers for one dollar to avoid the waiver wire. Sheppard had 24 goals the following season and in 1994 scored 52 goals for Detroit. So there.
5. Calgary gave up this promising player in 1988 for Rick Wamsley and Rob Ramage:

Answer: Brett Hull

Calgary won the Stanley Cup 1 year later but Wamsley was a backup and Ramage didn't play that much either -- Hull scored a St. Louis record 86 goals in 1991, and had 527 career goals in 744 games as a Blue.
6. Who did the New York Islanders acquire for Dave Lewis and Billy Harris on March 10, 1980?

Answer: Butch Goring

The addition of Goring spurred the Isles on to four straight Stanley Cups.
7. Vancouver traded their first round pick and this player for Barry Pederson June 6, 1986:

Answer: Cam Neely

Neely had a great career for the Bruins -- 344 goals in 525 games. Pederson was injured much of his time in Vancouver, but had 197 points in 233 games. The draft pick given to Boston was used to pick a useful defenceman, Glen Wesley.
8. Who did Calgary acquire from the Colorado Rockies for Don Lever and Bob MacMillan November 25, 1981?

Answer: Lanny McDonald

McDonald scored 34 goals for Calgary that season, and followed it up with a 66 goal season in 1982-83, a Flames record. McDonald also captained the Flames to the Stanley Cup in 1989.
9. What goalie has been traded twice with Dimitri Khristich?

Answer: Byron Dafoe

Dafoe and Khristich were traded to Los Angeles by Washington July 8, 1995 for L.A.'s 1st round pick (Washington selected Alexander Volchkov - who?). L.A. turned around and traded them both August 29, 1997 to Boston for Jozef Stumpel, Sandy Moger and a draft pick.
10. Who did the Edmonton Oilers trade to the New York Rangers for Doug Weight?

Answer: Esa Tikkanen

Tikkanen helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup one year after the March 17, 1993 trade. Following the Cup win they traded him to St. Louis for Petr Nedved, not bad. Weight shined for the Oilers, tallying 587 points in 588 games before they shipped him off to St. Louis in 2001.
11. Who did the Pittsburgh Penguins receive for John Cullen and Zarley Zalapski on March 4, 1991?

Answer: Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson

Francis and Samuelsson solidified the Penguins run for two straight Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. Francis recorded two 100-point season's for Pittsburgh and led the NHL in assists in 1995 and 1996. Ironically, Francis returned to the Hartford organization in 1998 when he signed as a free agent with Carolina Hurricanes, the relocated version of his old team.
12. Who did the Buffalo Sabres receive for Barrie Moore and Craig Millar on May 18, 1997?

Answer: Miroslav Satan

Satan scored 128 goals for Buffalo from 1997-2001 and was their leading goal scorer 3 straight years from 1999-2001. Millar and Moore did next to nothing for Edmonton.
13. Who did the Toronto Maple Leafs receive from Vancouver on February 18, 1980 along with Bill Derlago for Tiger Williams and Jerry Butler?

Answer: Rick Vaive

Vaive scored 290 goals for Toronto from 1980-87, and had 3 straight 50-goal seasons from 1982-84. Butler and Williams never did much for the Canucks.
14. Washington received what 2 defencemen along with Craig Laughlin and Doug Jarvis from Montreal for Rick Green and Ryan Walter on September 9, 1982?

Answer: Brian Engblom and Rod Langway

Langway won the Norris trophy as best defenceman in 1983 and 1984, as he and Engblom anchored the Caps' defence through the mid eighties.
15. What future 50-goal scorer did the Dallas Stars ship out on December 19, 1995?

Answer: Iginla

Jarome Iginla scored over 50 goals for Calgary in 2002, ironically the player Calgary traded to Dallas, Joe Nieuwendyk, was a former 50-goal man for the Flames as well. Nieuwendyk helped Dallas win the Stanley Cup in 1999, so they win the trade. As far as I know, this is the first trade involving former and future 50-goal scorers.
