Answer: Cleveland Indians

Before the 1960s, Cleveland had last gone to the promised land in 1954 after winning 111 games in the season. They lost to the Giants in four games. The Yankees appeared in five World Series in the 1960s, with the Dodgers and Cardinals showing up for three. Others to make the trip in the decade were the Pirates, Giants, Orioles, Reds, Twins, Red Sox, Tigers, and Mets.
2. How many American and National League teams were part of the new Major League Baseball in 1901?

Answer: 16

The American League consisted of (in order of finish); White Sox, Red Sox, Tigers, Athletics, Orioles, Senators, Blues, and Brewers. The National League fielded the Pirates, Phillies, Superbas, Cardinals, Beaneaters, Orphans, Giants, and Reds.
3. Which of the following cities had a Major League team, lost it, then waited 52 years to get another one?

Answer: Baltimore and Milwaukee

In Baltimore, they had the Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and 1902. The franchise then moved to New York to become the New Highlanders, then Yankees. Baltimore would wait until 1954 before getting the former St. Louis Browns, renamed Baltimore Orioles. The Milwaukee Brewers first appeared in the American League in 1901.

After the season, the franchise moved to St. Louis to become the Browns. Milwaukee did not see another team until 1953 when the Braves moved from Boston.
4. For the first time in Major League history, two players tied for the season Most Valuable Player Award. They were Keith Hernandez of the Cardinals and which Pittsburgh Pirate?

Answer: Willie Stargell

The ballots were recounted and recalculated numerous times in 1979, but the decision was made to tie the two. Hernandez batted .344 with 11 home runs and 210 hits. Stargell batted .281 with 32 home runs and 119 hits. The Pirates won the NL East, then went all the way and defeated the Orioles in the World Series.
5. Rickey Henderson was a base stealing wonder. When he retired in 2003, Henderson had led his league 12 times as the biggest thief. He broke the record of another speedster who led his league 10 times in stolen bases. Who was this magician that preceeded Henderson?

Answer: Max Carey

Carey played from 1910-1929, and most with the Pirates. From 1913-1925, he led the league in every season but two. His season high was 63 in 1916. He retired with 738. Henderson's season high was 130 in 1982, and he retired with 1406 thefts.
6. The New York Yankees set a Major League in the 1930s by playing 308 consecutive games without being shutout. Which pitcher stopped their streak in 1933?

Answer: Lefty Grove

The streak lasted exactly two years to the date, and ended on August 3, 1933. Grove was in his final of nine seasons with the Athletics. Lefty threw only two shutouts in the season, and 35 over his 17-season career.
7. Who was the first player in baseball history to go 6-for-6 in a nine inning game?

Answer: Davy Force

After playing in five seasons with the National Association from 1871-1875, Davy joined the new National League in 1876. He was wearing the uniform of the Philadelphia Athletics. Ironcially, Force batted only .232 and had 66 hits in his 60 games in the season.

The Athletics finished seventh of eight teams. Davy retired in 1886 after 15 seasons with a .249 career average. He never led the league in anything, but put his name in the record books for his 6-for-6 game.
8. Which pitcher was on the mound to experience 27 consecutive outs, no hits, no walks, no errors, and yet did not get credit for a perfect game?

Answer: Ernie Shore

It all happened on June 23, 1917. Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox started the game against the Washington Senators. After walking the Senators lead-off hitter, Ruth became so infuriated with the home plate umpire, that the Babe threw a punch at him.

He was ejected and suspended for 10 games. Shore came in relief. Before his first pitch, the runner was thrown out trying to steal second base. The rest was 26 more outs and baseball history.
9. How many seasons did it take manager Joe Torre to take his team to a World Series appearance?

Answer: 15

Joe began his managerial career with the Mets in 1977. He was hired by the Braves in 1982, then the Cardinals in 1990. It wasn't until season number 15 in 1996, his first with the Yankees, that he not only made an appearance, but went all the way to defeat the Braves. Joe would later take the Yankees to five more World Series appearances while winning three.
10. Who was the first Cleveland Indian to win a MVP Award?

Answer: George Burns

The MVP Award began in 1911. Ty Cobb (AL) and Frank Schulte (NL) were the first recepients. 1926 saw the Indians get a share of the pie when their first baseman Burns, batted .358 with 216 hits in the season. He won the MVP over Johnny Mostil of the White Sox and Herb Pennock of the Yankees.
