Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two goalies started the season for the Leafs despite each being only 19 years old?

Answer: Allan Bester and Ken Wregget

This appears to be the first time in NHL history that two goalies so young started the season together. The reason this never happened before is that it doesn't work. Both Wregget and Bester were in St. Catherines (AHL) by December '84.
2. This Leaf netminder got hurt in goal against Boston and had to be taken off on a stretcher, but has never been given credit for playing that game?

Answer: Rick St. Croix

On January 9, Rick St. Croix suffered a pulled hamstring while giving up 2 consecutive shorthanded goals. Steve Kasper scored both with the second, happening at 2:47 of the first period. Tim Bernhardt replaced him and got credit for last 57:13. The record books show St. Croix playing 9 games not 10!
3. What two Leafs both scored their first NHL goals in a game at Los Angeles on Janurary 16?

Answer: Ken Strong and Bill Kitchen

Both Kitchen and Strong scored their first goals in a 4-3 win at L.A. in the second period. Both were December call-ups and scored 3 career goals between them.
4. What player set a team record by scoring in 10 straight games?

Answer: John Anderson

Anderson got 14 goals in his last 10 games to end the season. Only 3 of them were scored in the first period. Ironically, these were his last 10 games as a Leaf.
5. The 1984-85 Leafs had a team record 52 losses. Who was the rookie coach?

Answer: Dan Maloney

Former Leaf player Dan Maloney guided the Leafs to 48 points, and last overall in his first of two seasons as coach. He was a hard-nosed coach and most of the Leafs were used to the easy-going Mike Nykoluk.
6. Who was the only helmet-less player on the team that season?

Answer: Jeff Brubaker

The tough winger was claimed off waivers from Edmonton in October, and quickly became a fan favorite scoring 8 goals. Terry Martin was dumped at his expense.
7. What Leaf star was benched for the entire game on March 16 against the Flyers?

Answer: Rick Vaive

Rick Vaive swore at Coach Maloney the day before at practice and this was the payback.
8. How many points did John Anderson and Bill Derlago combine for on April 3 at Minnesota in a 9-7 loss?

Answer: 9

Anderson got 2 goals and 2 assists while Derlago got 3 goals and 2 assists. This was the highest scoring game the team was in all year.
9. Who was the only team the Leafs swept despite finishing 46 points behind them?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

The Leafs won all 3 games out-scoring Montreal 15 to 8. Tim Bernhardt stopped 73 of 77 shots on February 9 and 10 combined.
10. Which of the following Leafs never played on any foward position during the season.

Answer: Borje Salming

Defenceman Borje Salming was the oldest Leaf player at 33. He was the only rear guard with much experience. Leeman and Korn were both former defencemen that were converted to left wing with the Leafs lack of depth there.
