Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Enos Slaughter's game winning "Mad Dash" from first to home to score the winning run in the 1946 World Series for the Cardinals ranks as an exciting, memorable moment. What team did the Cardinals beat in that World Series?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Slaughter had singled in the bottom of the 8th inning to lead off. But after the next two batters made outs, he decided to attempt a steal of second base just as Harry Walker made contact and hit one into the gap in center field. Slaughter just kept running and crossed the plate to break a 3-3 tie and St. Louis went on to win the game and the Series.
2. Whose dramatic homerun caused Cardinal announcer Jack Buck to scream "Go crazy folks! Go crazy!" ?

Answer: Ozzie Smith

Not normally known for his power, Ozzie's homerun came at a crucial point for the Cardinals: Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series. It was his first career homerun hitting left handed and it won the game for St. Louis. The Cardinals went on to take Game 6 and go to the World Series to face their cross-state rivals the Kansas City Royals (won 4-3 by the Royals).
3. In what year did the Cardinals sign Tony LaRussa to manage the team?

Answer: 1996

When LaRussa retired he was the third winningest manager in major league history behind Connie Mack and John McGraw. He led the Cardinals to three NationaL League championships and two World Series championships before retiring after the 2012 season.
4. The Cardinals won three National League pennants in the 1980s, but only one World Series. In which year did they win the World Series?

Answer: 1982

The Cardinals bested the Milwaukee Brewers to win the World Series in 1982. In 1985 they lost the Series to the Kansas City Royals and in 1987 they lost to the Minnesota Twins. They didn't make the post season in 1983.
5. One of the great Cardinal World Series moments came in 1926, when Grover Cleveland Alexander relieved starter Jesse Haines and struck out Tony Lazzeri, with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to preserve the Redbirds 3-2 lead over the Yankees. Who was the Cardinal's manager?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Haines came out because of a finger injury on his pitching hand. Alexander went on to finish the game, allowing no Yankee hits.
6. The last at bat in Stan Musial's career certainly ranks as one of the most memorable Cardinal moments, especially since he got a hit. How old was Stan "The Man" when he retired?

Answer: 42

Born November 21, 1920, Stan's last hit was against the Cincinati Reds (September 29, 1963). It was a single past Pete Rose, the Reds' second baseman. The total number of hits in Stan's career was 3630 -- 1815 at home and 1815 on the road.
7. On April 23, 1999 this Cardinal hit two grand slam homeruns in the same inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Who was he?

Answer: Fernando Tatis

Tatis was the third baseman for the Cardinals. Both of his grand slams came off Dodger pitcher Chan Ho Park. To quote ABBA, there was truly "something in the air that night".
8. In August 1971, Bob Gibson threw the only no-hitter of his major league career. Who did he throw it against?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

Bob Gibson played 17 seasons for the Cardinals (1959 to 1975). He made his first of nine All-Star Game appearances in 1962.
9. In September 1993, Cardinal outfielder Mark Whiten did something no other Cardinal has ever done. What was it?

Answer: Hit four homeruns in one game

Whiten's feat came on September 7, 1993 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. He also tied a National League record for most RBIs in a doubleheader (13).
10. In the 1963 All Star Game all four infield starters were Cardinals. Who was the shortstop?

Answer: Dick Groat

The other Cardinal to make the 1963 All Star team was Stan Musial. It was his last season. Groat came to the Cardinals in November 1962 in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates and played with them from 1963 t0o 1965.
