Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the southpaw who, at the age of only 16, became the youngest player to appear in a major league game?

Answer: Joe Nuxhall

This occurred during World War II when many pitchers over 18 were either drafted or enlisted. Joe was too young to go to war but he wasn't too young to play for Cincinnati.
2. Who was the rookie hurler that burst onto the major league scene at the age of 20 and amazingly struck out 20 batters in just the fifth start of his career?

Answer: Kerry Wood

He accomplished this feat April 12, 1998 for the Chicago Cubs while shutting out the Houston Astros (and to top it off he yielded no walks).
3. Who is the southpaw who hurled two consecutive no-hitters in 1938?

Answer: Johnny Vander Meer

He did it pitching for the Cincinnati Reds while beating the Boston Braves 3-0 on June 11th and then the Brooklyn Dodgers 6-0 on June 15th.
June 15, 1938 was the date of the first night game in the history of Ebbets Field.
4. What two pitchers combined to stop Joe DiMaggio's record 56 game hitting streak in 1941?

Answer: Al Smith and Jim Bagby

Cleveland's Al Smith retired "The Yankee Clipper" the first three times he batted and Jim Bagby got him on his fourth and final at bat. During the amazing streak which went from May 15, 1941 to July 17, 1941 Joe D. compiled a batting average of 0.408.
5. Who was the first pitcher in history to record 3,000 strike outs?

Answer: Walter Johnson

"The Big Train" reached that plateau on July 22, 1923. Bob "Hoot" Gibson turned the trick on July 17, 1974 and Gaylord Perry did it on October 1, 1978.
Sandy Koufax, who had to retire at the age of 30 due to injuries, never got to 3000 strike outs, finishing his Hall of Fame career with 2,396.
6. Who was the first pitcher to hurl a no-hitter on Opening Day of the season?

Answer: Bob Feller

"Rapid Robert" did it on April 16, 1940. Feller who is also known as "The Heater from Van Meter" did it against the Chicago White Sox. (Van Meter, Iowa is where he was born on November 3,1918).
7. Which pitcher surrendered Bill Mazeroski's World Series winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of game seven in 1961?

Answer: Ralph Terry

After the Yankees rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the score, Maz hit one of the most famous home runs in baseball history to give the Pirates a 10-9 victory. The left fielder, who could only watch as the ball sailed over his head and the left field wall, was Yogi Berra.
8. What pitcher threw a no-hitter in his first major league start in 1953?

Answer: Bobo Holloman

He did it for the St. Louis Browns against the Philadelphia A's. Oddly, when he accomplished this feat on May 6th 1953, it would turn out to be one of only three career wins for him. During that season (his only year in the majors) he would go on to compile a record of 3 wins and 7 losses with an ERA of 5.23.
Prior to his doing so the only other pitcher to do the same was Bumpus Jones in 1892.
9. Pitching nine innings of perfect ball is usually enough to earn a pitcher a perfect game...but not always. Who was the pitcher who tossed twelve perfect innings only to lose his chance for baseball immortality in the unlucky thirteenth?

Answer: Harvey Haddix

It happened on May 26th 1959, against the Milwaukee Braves. Not only did the Pirates lefty lose his perfect game (on an error) in the thirteenth inning, he also lost his no-hitter ... and the game!
The only hit he surrendered was to Joe Adcock.
10. Roberto Clemente, a Hall of Fame rightfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, amassed a total of exactly 3,000 hits. Off which pitcher did he connect for hit number 3,000 in the final at bat of his career, on the last day of the 1972 season?

Answer: Jon Matlack

It happenened at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh on September 30th 1972, when he lashed a line drive double off the Mets rookie southpaw. Tragically, just three months later on December 31st 1972, he was killed when a plane he was on crashed as it sought to deliver relief goods to the survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua.
Roberto Clemente was the first Hispanic member of the Hall of Fame.
