Answer: 1876

Members of the Middlesbrough Cricket Club formed the team in 1876 and a year later, they played their first recorded game which ended in a 1-1 draw with Teeside Wanderers.
2. Where did the club first play their home games?

Answer: Old Archery Ground

Middlesbrough played at the Old Archery Ground from 1877-79, followed by Breckon Hill until 1892, when they had a spell at Linthorpe Park until 1903. The club then moved to Ayresome Park, which was their home until moving into the brand new Riverside Stadium in 1994.
3. Who was the club's first manager in their history?

Answer: John Robson

Robson was at the helm between 1899-1905, when Alex Massie took over for a year. Andy Aitken followed until 1909, followed by short spells by J Gunter (1908-10) and A Walker (1910-11), until Tom McIntosh became manager until 1919. John Robson went on to manage Manchester United at the start of World War I, until 1921.
4. Which of these played the most League games for the club?

Answer: Tim Williamson

Williamson played an amazing 563 games for Middlesbrough between 1902-23. Souness amassed 178 League games between 1972-78. Camsell played 453 games from 1925-46, and Mannion played 368 games between 1937-54.
5. From which team did Middlesbrough sign Gareth Southgate in 2001?

Answer: Aston Villa

Southgate was born in Watford in 1970, and signed for Crystal Palace as a trainee in 1989 where he played 152 League games between 1989-95, before signing for Aston Villa. At Villa Park, he played 191 League games until 2001, when Middlesbrough snapped up the England international defender.
6. How many goals did Brian Clough score for Middlesbrough?

Answer: 204

Clough's 204 goals came in just 222 games; almost a goal a game! A true legend of the game, Clough made his Middlesbrough debut in 1955, before signing for Sunderland in 1961. Sadly, Clough died at the age of 69 in September, 2004.
7. Which team did Middlesbrough beat 9-0 to set a record for their highest League win?

Answer: Brighton & Hove Albion

Middlesbrough hammered Brighton 9-0 in August 1958 to set the record. Incidentally, they lost 9-0 to Blackburn Rovers which set the record for their heaviest defeat.
8. Middlesbrough were promoted to the Premiership in the 1994-95 season, after winning the Championship title. Which other team were promoted alongside them that season?

Answer: Bolton Wanderers

Middlesbrough finished as champions on 82 points, with Reading 2nd on 79. Bolton ended 3rd, but were promoted via the play-offs. Relegated from the Premiership that season were Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Leicester City and Ipswich Town.
9. In the 2004-05 Premiership season, Middlesbrough earned a UEFA Cup place by drawing with which team on the last day of the season?

Answer: Manchester City

Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with each of these teams, but on the final day of the season, they needed to avoid defeat at the City of Manchester Stadium, and did so via Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink's goal in the 23rd minute. Kiki Musampa levelled the score for City, but it was Middlesbrough that gained the UEFA Cup place.
10. What feat did Middlesbrough achieve in the 1996-97 season?

Answer: Reached the FA Cup and League Cup finals

While Middlesbrough were relegated from the Premiership in the 1996-97 season, they also reached the League Cup final, where Steve Claridge's extra-time goal gave Leicester City a 1-0 victory. A month later, they played in the FA Cup final, where Chelsea took the Cup with goals from Roberto Di Matteo in the 1st minute, and Edide Newton in the 83rd.
