The VFL (Victorian Football League) was the predominant football league in Australia. In order to progress the sport, the VFL decided to expand nationally during the 1990s. In 1990, the VFL changed the acronym to AFL (Australian Football League) to reflect the league's national perspective.

Pike was the first Canadian ever to play in the AFL. What made Pike's signing even more interesting was that he had played for Canada in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Injuries cut short Pike's rugby career, hence why he made the peculiar switch to AFL.
