Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yankee star Alex Rodriguez reached his 30+ home run mark in 10 consecutive seasons in 2007. This included hitting 50+ twice in this run. Which team did A-Rod begin his Major League career with?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

Rodriguez played for seven Mariner seasons from 1994-2000, then signed as a free agent with the Texas Rangers. In 2004, the Rangers traded this shortstop to the New York Yankees, who moved over to third base to give way to Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter.
2. In August 2007, which team embarrassed the Baltimore Orioles by defeating them 30-3?

Answer: Texas Rangers

The Rangers scattered 29 hits, including centerfielder David Murphy's five hits. The Orioles gave up six home runs to the Rangers. To make matters worse, the game was played in Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Kason Gabbard took the win for Texas.
3. Who was the first team in the 21st century to be skunked four games to none in a World Series?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals were handed the skunk at the hands of the Boston Red Sox in 2004, including a 3-0 game four shutout. The other teams listed had not seen a World Series in the 21st century yet. The Cardinals would redeem themselves in 2006, defeating the Tigers in the World Series, four games to one.
4. The four listed managers all won over 1900 games in their career. Which of them never played in more than one Major League baseball game?

Answer: Walter Alston

The all played in at least 10 Major League seasons before becoming a manager, except for Alston. His lone appearance was with the 1936 St. Louis Cardinals. In his only at-bat in his career, he struck out. Playing in the same game in the field, the first baseman had one put-out and one error.

He then took the reins of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954, taking them to a World Series title in 1955. Walter led the Dodgers to seven World Series appearances in his career, was inducted into the hall in 1983, then died in 1984.
5. How many pitching Triple Crowns did the great Cy Young win during his career?

Answer: 1

His only Triple Crown came in 1901 with the new Boston Americans of the new American League. After going 19-19 with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1900, Cy went 33-10 with Boston in their inaugural season. His ERA was 1.62 with 158 strikeouts. Young played from 1890-1911, and won a record 511 career games. He appeared in 906 games, averaging 41 per season.
6. The 2007 St. Louis Cardinals began their franchise history in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in the National League. From 1883-1898 they were the Browns. 1899 saw them with a new name for only one season, before becoming the Cardinals in 1900. Which name did they carry in 1899?

Answer: Perfectos

After losing more than 100 games in two consecutive seasons, the 1899 Perfectos inherited the stars from the 1898 Cleveland Spiders, including pitcher Cy Young and player-manager Patsy Tebeau. Young won 26 games, and the team went 84-67 in the season.
7. The Philadelphia Phillies lost 100+ games in five consecutive seasons from 1938-1942. The owners decided a name change was in order. What new name did the team carry for two seasons before changing back to the Phillies?

Answer: Blue Jays

In both the 1943 and 1944 seasons, the stigma was gone as the team didn't lose 100 games in either season. The team then went back to the Phillies name, then lost 108 games in 1945. In 1950, they won the National League pennant.
8. Which of the following won consecutive season MVP awards?

Answer: Roger Maris

Maris won his two MVPs with the Yankees in the 1960 and 1961 season. 1961 saw him hit 61 home runs in the 162-game season, breaking Babe Ruth's record of 60 in his 154-game season in 1927. Maris came to the Yankees in December 1959 in a Kansas City Athletic trade that saw pitcher Don Larsen go to the Athletics.
9. From 1936-1945, how many New York Yankees by team name (Yankees) were inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in the award's first 10 seasons?

Answer: 2

Only Babe Ruth (1936) in the hall's first year, and Lou Gehrig (1939) were inducted into immortality. Willie Keeler played for seven seasons for the New York Highlanders from 1903-1909. Keeler was inducted in 1939 along with Gehrig. The franchise took the Yankee name in 1913.
10. In 2006, who led the Major Leagues with the most home runs in the season?
