Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which driver crashed so heavily in the third part of qualifying at the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix that he was unable to compete in the race?

Answer: Sergio Perez

Perez lost control of his Sauber on exiting the tunnel. Unlike Nico Rosberg earlier in the weekend, Perez connected heavily with the barrier around the Nouvelle Chicane. This resulted in the session being red flagged whilst the medical staff removed him from the car and the barrier was repaired.
2. At Sauber, there was a brief driver change for the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. Which driver was told 10 minutes before the second practice session that he was driving the car?

Answer: Pedro De La Rosa

Pedro De La Rosa was a reserve driver for both McLaren and Sauber in the 2011 season. Whilst Sergio Perez competed in the first free practice session, he was still feeling the effects of his Monaco crash and therefore told Sauber he could not race. De La Rosa lost a significant amount of time in the second free practice session as Perez's car was modified and even had to race in his McLaren overalls. Sauber's other reserve driver, Gutierrez, was not at the Canadian Grand Prix.
3. It looked like Sebastian Vettel was going to get his sixth win in seven races at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. However, an error on the last lap enabled which driver to overtake him and claim the top spot on the podium?

Answer: Jenson Button

Due to the weather, the Canadian Grand Prix started behind the safety car and was actually red flagged at one point. Jenson Button started the race in seventh position but due to various factors, including a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane, he was running last at one point.

It was therefore a superb drive to pass all the cars in the race and to be hunting down race-leader Vettel, who made an uncharacteristic mistake on the last lap.
4. Compared to previous years, what was different about the 2011 British Grand Prix?

Answer: The start/finish and pit complex had been moved

As a result of the upgrades to the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, the circuit layout was changed for the 2010 race. The next step, for 2011, was the construction of a new pit and paddock complex that moved the start of the race from the traditional site after Woodcote Corner to the straight between the Club and Abbey corners.
5. Who won the 2011 British Grand Prix?

Answer: Fernando Alonso

Webber and Vettel were at the front of the grid as the race started, with the young German taking the lead into the first corner. Unusually, however, Red Bull made a mistake during the second phase of pit stops. This enabled both Alonso and Hamilton to pass Vettel whilst he was in the pits.

The win in Britain was Ferrari's only victory of 2011, which resulted in Ferrari boss Luca Di Montezemolo give his team a score of 5/10 for the season.
6. The 2011 German Grand Prix was held at the Nurburgring.

Answer: True

At the height of Michael Schumacher's success, the German Grand Prix was held at Hockenheim and the European Grand Prix was held at the Nurburgring. Since 2007, Germany had only held one Grand Prix per season and this had alternated between the two circuits (although for contractual reasons the 2007 race continued to be called the European Grand Prix).
7. Jenson Button won the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix, but how many Formula One races had he started up to and including this race weekend.

Answer: 200

Jenson Button's first race was with Williams in 2000. He subsequently raced for Benetton, Renault, BAR and Honda before winning his championship with Brawn GP in 2009. He subsequently moved to McLaren to become Lewis Hamilton's team-mate. Whilst many commentators thought this was a mistake, in 2011, Jenson outscored his younger team-mate, becoming the first driver to do so.
8. Mid-season driver changes are not uncommon in Formula 1. Who replaced Nick Heidfeld driving for Lotus Renault?

Answer: Bruno Senna

All of the incorrect options were reserve drivers during the 2011 season, Anthony Davidson was the reserve driver for Mercedes-GP, Jean-Eric Verne for Toro Rosso and Nico Hulkenberg for Force India; however, none of them had the opportunity to take part in a race in 2011.
9. Two drivers managed to crash into each other on five occasions during the 2011 season. Which two?

Answer: Lewis Hamilton & Felipe Massa

Hamilton and Massa hit each other in Monaco, Singapore (practice), Singapore (race), Japan and India. As a result, Massa was very critical of Hamilton's driving. The two ended their 'feud' when Lewis went to see Felipe after the final race of the season in Brazil.
10. Jenson Button won the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix. However, Sebastian Vettel won the championship by finishing third. By doing so, he became the youngest ever back-to-back World Champion ... at what age?

Answer: 24

Sebastian Vettel was born in July 1987. After becoming the youngest runner-up in Formula 1 history in 2009 at the age of 22, he added the accolade of youngest World Champion in 2010. In 2011, he surpassed Fernando Alonso's record by becoming both the youngest double World Champion and the youngest consecutive World Champion.
11. The inaugural Indian Grand Prix was held on 30th October 2011. Did an Indian driver compete in this race?

Answer: Yes

Narain Karthikeyan started the season driving for HRT, however he was dropped after the European Grand Prix in Valencia. Even so, HRT allowed him to participate in the Indian Grand Prix weekend in place of their other driver, Vitantonio Liuzzi, ensuring the home crowd had someone to cheer.

Karun Chandok, was hoping that Team Lotus would also consider such an arrangement. Unfortunately for him, team boss Tony Fernandez decided that the best chance that Team Lotus had of securing 10th position in the championship was for Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli to retain their seats.
12. Sebastian Vettel finished every race in 2011.

Answer: False

In a 19-race season, Vettel recorded 11 wins, 5 second places, 1 third place, 1 fourth and 1 DNF (Did Not Finish). The only race where he failed to cross the finishing line was in Abu Dhabi when, despite starting from pole position, he picked up a puncture at the first corner and spun off. Whilst he was able to recover to the pits, his car was too badly damaged to be able to continue.
13. How many races did Mark Webber win in the 2011 Formula One season?

Answer: 1

Mark's only race win came in Brazil 2011, the last race of the season, when Vettel's car was suffering from a gearbox malfunction.
14. In the 1992 season, Nigel Mansell achieved 14 pole positions in a season. How many did Sebastian Vettel achieve in the 2011 season?

Answer: 15

Sebastian Vettel equalled Mansell's record at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and surpassed it as the final race in Brazil. However, there were 19 races in the 2011 season whereas there were only 16 in 1992.
15. Sebastian Vettel won the 2010 World Driver's Championship with 256 points. By the end of the 2011 season, how many drivers had exceeded this points total?

Answer: 4

The points accrued by each driver show how dominant and how reliable the Red Bull Racing car driven by Sebastian Vettel was. Vettel won the 2011 championship with four races to space with a points tally of 392. Jenson Button was his closest challenger with 270. With 25 points available for a win, the difference was nearly 5 race victories!

Mark Webber, with 258, and Fernando Alonso, with 257, both exceeded Vettel's 2010 total.
