Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Races have been delayed or postponed for rain or even snow. What caused the 1998 Pepsi 400 at Daytona to be delayed from July 4th until October 17th?

Answer: The track was being used as a staging area for firefighters battling wildfires in central Florida

The 1998 Pepsi 400 at Daytona was originally scheduled to be the first superspeedway race run at night and covered flag-to-flag by CBS in prime time. The race was still run under the lights but CBS opted to move coverage to TNN rather than show the race against game 1 of the 1998 World Series.
2. Qualifying- This driver, known for his red hair and Georgia accent, set the fastest qualifying lap ever with a speed of 212.809 mph at Talladega on April 30, 1987. Who was this "Million Dollar" man who calls Dawsonville, Ga home?

Answer: Bill Elliott

"Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" also set a record that year at Daytona with a speed of 210.364 mph. Elliott was the 1988 series champion and was voted most popular driver 16 times. His son Chase Elliott made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in 2013.

Answer: J.D. McDuffie

J.D. McDuffie was one of the last independent drivers in NASCAR. He raced in NASCAR's top series for 27 seasons collecting 12 top 5 and 106 top 10 finishes. J.D. started from the pole position once, in 1978 when he was the fastest qualifier for the Delaware 500 at Dover, Delaware.
4. Caution! The yellow flag is out. Few races are run without at least one caution for an accident. Which driver has the dubious honor of being the first driver to crash in a NASCAR sanctioned event?

Answer: Lee Petty

Lee Petty had borrowed a Buick Roadmaster from a family friend for the race. The Buick barrell rolled four times when the sway bar broke leaving the car a pile of junk. Petty went on to race his own cars to 3 championships and lay the foundation that would lead to the reign of NASCAR's King.

5. Pit crews play an important role in the success of a race team. Several teams have been given colorful names over the years. What name did Matt Kenseth's crew adopt when Matt drove the Dewalt Ford for Roush Racing?

The Killer Bees won the NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge in 2001 and 2002. The team took on the name because of their black and yellow uniforms and the speed they conducted pit stops.
6. On November 22, 1998 NASCAR held an exhibition race on the Twin Ring Motegi oval in Motegi, Japan. Who won the 311 mile race known as the Coca Cola 500?
