The PAC-10 was established in 1959. It began with five teams (Cal, Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Washington) that were all former members of the Pacific Coast Conference, which was dissolved in 1958 due to a "pay-and-play" scandal. In 1968 it changed its name to the PAC-8, and then in 1978 it changed again to the PAC-10.

The Big West Conference was founded in 1969 and originally included only teams from California. In 1979, they let the first non-California team join the conference which was Utah State.
