The Irish had a very easy schedule despite the talk. Notre Dame played 5 teams that in the regular season had winning records. BYU lost their bowl game to drop to 6-6, and ND lost to Southern Cal and Ohio State. The other teams they defeated were Navy and Michigan.

The ACC and Conference USA. In the Conference USA, Tulsa defeated UCF 44-27, and in the ACC championship, Virginia Tech lost to FSU 27-22.
