Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First played in 1894, this rivalry game became known as the "Civil War" in 1929. In 1959 the Platypus Trophy was created for the game. Which two in-state rivals play for this trophy, which features a significant characteristic of each school's mascot?

Answer: Oregon and Oregon State

Of course the platypus features a duck-like bill (Oregon Ducks) and a flat, beaver-like tail (Oregon State Beavers). The trophy was awarded for only three years (1959-60-61) before disappearing. It reappeared in 2005 and has been awarded to the winning school's alumni association since 2007.

As of 2012, Oregon had won the platypus five times and OSU three. The two schools had played 116 times.
2. The most-played Division I-FBS game is between two schools competing for Paul Bunyan's Axe in a rivalry which began in 1890. Which northern institutions can win this trophy?

Answer: Minnesota and Wisconsin

The Axe handle is six feet long, with the names of the winning school of each game. The original trophy was created in 1948 and retired in 2003, with a new axe being exchanged since 2004. Prior to 1943, the schools played for a trophy called the Slab of Bacon, which was lost in 1943 and recovered in 1994.

There is also a Paul Bunyan Trophy, which goes to the winner of each season's Michigan-Michigan State game, a rivalry which began in 1898.
3. This in-state rivalry, which began in 1891, is the struggle for the Old Oaken Bucket, a trophy that has been awarded since 1925. Which two schools does this rivalry involve?

Answer: Indiana and Purdue

The first game played for the bucket (the 1925 game) was the second-ever scoreless tie (the first was in 1916). The longest winning streak is ten, and the longest undefeated streak is 15 games -- Purdue won ten straight (1948-1957), the 1958 game ended in a 15-15 tie; and Purdue won the next three (1959-60-61).
4. Floyd of Rosedale is a huge brass pig and the trophy for which Big 10 rivalry game?

Answer: Iowa and Minnesota

Rutgers and Notre Dame are not in the Big 10. Floyd of Rosedale is one of four trophy games for the Hawkeyes. The other three are the Cy-Hawk Trophy with Iowa State, the Heartland Trophy with Wisconsin, and the Heroes Trophy with Nebraska. The Big 10 is rife with other trophy games, as well, including, among others, the Land of Lincoln Trophy (Illinois and Northwestern), the Old Brass Spittoon (Indiana and Michigan State), and the Purdue Cannon (Purdue and Illinois).
5. The Little Brown Jug is played between two Big 10 teams, who began playing each other in 1892. Who competes for this trophy?

Answer: Michigan and Minnesota

The Big Ten began in 1896 as the Western Conference. Original members were the University of Chicago, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Northwestern. The U. of Chicago withdrew in 1946. The Little Brown Jug was first competed for in 1902. After each game between the Golden Gophers and the Wolverines, the jug is painted the school colors of the winning team.
6. This intrastate rivalry that goes back to before the two schools were even in a state. This rivalry began in 1899, while the state the schools were in did not gain statehood until 1912. Which two schools compete for the Territorial Cup?

Answer: Arizona and Arizona State

In 1899 Arizona State was known as the Tempe Normal School. Their season record was 3-0, having defeated Phoenix Union High School, the Phoenix Indian School, and the University of Arizona. They lost the next nine, won in 1931, and then lost the next 11 games to be 2-20 in the series after the 1948 game.
Their annual rivalry game is also known as "the Duel in the Desert".
7. This prestigious trophy is not based on a single game. Which of the following four teams is not eligible to win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy?

Answer: Notre Dame

The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy came about in 1972 when the Air Force Academy began playing Army and Navy on a yearly basis. It was first awarded by President Nixon to the victorious Army eleven. The Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy play Division III football and the winner of their annual game is awarded the Secretaries Cup.
8. Two universities in neighboring states, connected by Interstate 71, compete for the Keg of Nails each season. What schools are they?

Answer: U. of Cincinnati and U. of Louisville

The Keg of Nails trophy was instituted in 1929. It is the Cardinals' oldest football rivalry and the second-oldest for Cincinnati. The Bearcats won all twelve games played between 1929 and 1969.
9. The oldest football rivalry west of the Missouri River is a game played for the Bronze Boot. The first game was played in 1899, while the trophy was instituted in 1968. Like many such rivalries between schools in neighboring states, this game has long been referred to in these states as "the Border War." Which schools are involved?

Answer: Wyoming and Colorado State

The boot was worn in Vietnam by an Army ROTC instructor at Colorado State and is guarded by the winning school's ROTC unit for the year following each game. There is also a Golden Boot trophy game played between Arkansas and Louisiana State, with the first Golden Boot being awarded in 1996.

The "boot" is actually a four-foot high gold statue featuring the combined outlines of the state boundaries of the two states along with lakes and waterways.
10. This trophy game was first played in 1895, although the trophy goes back only to 1996. Which two in-state rivals compete each year, usually close to Thanksgiving, for the Commonwealth Cup?

Answer: Virginia and Virginia Tech

Only four US states identify themselves as commonwealths, those being Massachusetts, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Duke and Clemson are not in-state rivals, since Duke is in North Carolina and Clemson in South Carolina. Virgina won the first eight (1895 to 1904) and Tech tied the series at 21 apiece and four ties some 66 years later, when they won in 1961. Tech won again in 1962 and have led the series ever since.
