Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1985, the New York Jets who needed a wide receiver, drafted AL Toon out of Wisconsin. What superstar did they pass up on who was picked at number 16?

Answer: Jerry Rice

The Jets had their moment in the sun in Super Bowl III with the upset over the Colts. They never returned to the big game in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. Imagine what their chances would of been if they had of drafted the greatest wide receiver of all time in 1985 instead of Toon. The other three receivers also had great careers which included Super Bowl wins.
2. In 1995, the Cincinnati Bengals drafted one the biggest busts in NFL history when they chose Penn State running back Ki-Jana Carter. What running back did they pass up on who was drafted in the third round, and went on to become one of the greatest running backs in NFL history?

Answer: Curtis Martin

At the time of his retirement in 2006, Martin's 14,101 yds ranked him as the 4th best of all-time behind Emmitt Smith (18,355), Walter Payton (16,726) and Barry Sanders (15,269). He also joined Barry Sanders as the only running backs in NFL history to rush for over 1000 yards in their first 10 seasons. Carter tore his ACL in his rookie year during his first preseason game and never really recovered from that injury.

In Martin's ten 1000-yard seasons, he surpassed Carter's career rushing total of 1141 nine of those ten seasons.
3. Who was the highly taunted college star drafted sixth overall in 1996 who brought new meaning to the term, "troublemaker"?

Answer: Lawrence Phillips

Lawrence Phillips represented another sad story about a professional athlete whose superstar talent was overshadowed by his crimminal nature. When the Rams drafted him at number six in 1996, they had him poised to be the next Eric Dickerson. His NFL history was marked more with police records than with rushing records.

His argumentive attitude forced him to only play two years with the Rams. Between 1997-2003 he bounced from the NFL to CFL and back, never making an impact because of his character.

After retiring in 2003 he was involved in several domestic violence charges and it consummated in 2005 when he was charged with driving his car into three teenagers, followed in 2006 by seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
4. What Pro Bowl quarterback, picked 5th overall, was bypassed by the Baltimore Colts in 1982, when they chose Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter instead?

Answer: Jim McMahon

Not only was McMahon a Pro Bowler, but he also lead the 1985 Bears to the NFL title in Super Bowl XX. Schlichter, who nearly led the Buckeyes to a National Championship, had the Colts hoping he would bring that same talent to the NFL. However, his real talent turned out to be at the casinos with the bookies.

He was suspended by the league in 1985 when he had amassed a gambling debt. He played some arena football in the 90s only to to be busted with a rap sheet of over 20 felonies, including fraud and forgery.
5. What college provided three highly rated and highly drafted running backs whom became major draft disappointments?

Answer: Penn State

The Nittany Lions had a history of producing some of the best college backs. However, Blair Thomas, Ki-jana Carter, and Curtis Enis never lived up to their billing in spite of the fact they were all top five draft picks. The three combined for an NFL career of only 5000 yards between them. The top five running backs of all-time had twice that.
6. In the 1979 draft, what MVP and Super Bowl winning quarterback did the Cincinnati Bengals pass up on when they picked Washington State quarterback Jack Thompson third overall?

Answer: Joe Montana

Not only was Jack Thompson a major bust for the Bengals but the fact that they passed on Joe Montana came back to bite them twice. The Bengals appeared in just two Super Bowls prior to the 1990s and lost both to the San Francisco 49ers, led by Joe Montana.

In 1982, Montana led the Niners to a 20-0 halftime lead, and their defense stalled a Bengal second half comeback to win Super Bowl XVI by a score of 26-21. The two teams hooked up again in 1988 in Super Bowl XXIV in what was considered to be one of the best Super Bowls ever. Montana rallied the Niners from a 13-6 fourth quarter deficit with two touchdowns, including an 11-play 92-yard drive to end the game.

By the way, Simms was also passed up in that draft, but he didn't win a MVP.
7. Which of the following Heisman trophy winners was not an NFL bust?

Answer: Vinny Testaverde

Although Testaverde never won a Super Bowl, he did have a pretty successful career with several teams including Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and the New York Jets. In 2006, he played his 20th season with the New England Patriots where he continued his streak of at least one touchdown pass in 20 straight seasons. Ware never made an impact with the Lions, playing only 14 games in four seasons. Charles White had one good season in 1987 rushing for 1374 yards, but in his other eight seasons he never got over 400 yards. Griffin was the only two-time Heisman winner, and as a Bengal he never had more than three touchdowns in a season.

In fact, he managed only one score in four of his seven seasons.
8. In 1967 with the third pick overall, the San Francisco 49ers drafted Heisman trophy winning quarterback Steve Spurrier, who became merely a decent backup in the NFL. What quarterback was picked immediately after Spurrier that went on to have a Hall Of Fame career?

Answer: Bob Griese

Although Spurrier never made an impact as an NFL quarterback, he would go on to become one of the best college coaches at Florida. Griese led the 17-0 Dolphins to an undefeated season, and had a career that consumated in Canton.
9. One of the best drafts of all-time was the 1983 draft which was loaded with talent. With the 7th pick, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge. Of the following future Hall of Famers, the Chiefs passed up on three of them. Which of the four was already selected?

Answer: Eric Dickerson

Dickerson was chosen second overall by the Rams, but the Chiefs could of had Marino who broke most all of the NFL passing records while with the Dolphins. Kelly led the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls even those they lost all four. Matthews was a great offensive lineman for the Houston Oilers.

Other notable players that the Chiefs passed on were Redskins supertar cornerback Darrell Green, Vikings All-Pro safety Joey Browner, New York Jet quarterback Ken O'Brien, and 49er running back Roger Craig.
10. In 2000, the 49ers chose the second quarterback in the draft, a player by the name of Giovanni Carmazzi out of Hofstra. What successful quarterback was still on the board that the Niners passed up on as well as every other team?

Answer: Tom Brady

Carmazzi never played a game in the NFL, and the three quarterbacks on the Niners roster (Jeff Garcia, Rick Mirer and Tim Rattay) never really amounted to anything. Imagine the Niners if Brady was there passing the ball to Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens. Instead, Brady took the Patriots to three Super Bowl titles in four years.
