Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What quarterback in 1994, set two NFL records in one game with 45 pass completions in 70 attempts?

Answer: Drew Bledsoe

This happened in a 26-20 overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings.
2. Jack "The Assassin" Tatum of the Oakland Raiders, did what against the Green Bay Packers in 1972?

Answer: Set a NFL record with a 104 yard fumble return.

Tatum's score helped the Raiders to a 20-14 win. Six years later, in one of the league's greatest tragedies, Tatum hit Patriots wide receiver Darryl Stingley as he fell to the ground and paralyzed him. Though Tatum was known for "dirty play", this hit appeared to be clean. No one in the 20th century intercepted more than four passes in one game. Jerry Twyman was my 10th grade biology teacher and was never a coach for the Packers.
3. The Dallas Cowboys were the first team to win 5 Super Bowls?

Answer: False

The Cowboys were the first to play in 5 Super Bowls (1971, 1972, 1976, 1978 and 1979; won two), but the San Francisco 49ers were the first to win 5 (1982, 1985 1989, 1990 and 1995). The 49ers won their first five appearances in the Big Dance.
4. What problem was Kansas City quarterback Len Dawson faced with, just as his Chiefs were preparing to take on the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV?

Answer: accused of illegal gambling

Dawson was named the game's MVP as the Chiefs beat the Vikings 23-7, in the last game played between AFL and NFL teams. Later, Dawson was cleared of any wrong doing.
5. In 1974, the first regular season overtime game ever played ended in a tie?

Answer: True

The Steelers and Broncos played to a 35-35 tie on September 22, 1974. The NFL had decided to institute overtime as a way of reducing the amount of tie games. Obviously, after this game it seemed the idea was not working but of the 286 other overtime games played during the century, only 14 ended in ties. Oddly enough, this game was one of only two overtime games played that year, the fewest of any year through 1999.
6. Which of these was the only team in the 20th century to score three safeties in one game?

Answer: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams accomplished this in a 33-12 win over the New York Giants on September 30, 1984.
7. Which of these teams was the only team to win an overtime game with a safety during the 20th century?

Answer: Minnesota Vikings

This happened on November 5, 1989. Vikings linebacker Mike Merriweather blocked a Rams punt and the ball rolled through the end zone for a safety. Final Score: Vikings 23 Rams 21.
8. Green Bay Packers kicker Chester Marcol once ran his own blocked field goal attempt in for a touchdown to win an overtime game?

Answer: True

What a bizarre play! Marcol did this on opening day, 1980. The Packers beat the Chicago Bears, 12-6.
9. Which of these tight ends was in the top 10 in career pass receptions at the end of the century?

Answer: there was no tight end in the top 10

All players in the top 10 at the time were wide receivers. Sharpe joined the club in 2003, passing James Lofton with his 765th reception.
10. Dan Marino and which of these quarterbacks were the only two to lead the league in passing yardage 5 times in the 20th century?

Answer: Sonny Jurgensen

Jurgensen led the league in 1961 and 1962 for the Philadelphia Eagles, and 1966-1967 and 1969 for the Washington Redskins. Marino led the league for the Miami Dolphins in 1984-1986, 1988, 1992.
11. In 2002, Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison set an NFL record with 143 pass receptions. Whose 7 year old record did he break?

Answer: Herman Moore

Moore caught 123 passes in 1995. That same year, Carter and Rice each caught 122 while Bruce hauled in 119. 2002 was Harrison's 4th straight year over 100 receptions.
12. Who was the only player to lead the NFL in interceptions 3 times during the 20th century?

Answer: Everson Walls

Walls led the league as a rookie for the Cowboys in 1981. He then led the league again in 1982 and 1985. Krause had the most career interceptions at the time but led the league only once. Lott and Lane each led the league twice and Lane set the record for most picks in one season with 14 in 1952.
13. Who had the most punt returns for touchdowns in the 20th century?

Answer: Eric Metcalf

At the end of the century, Metcalf had returned 9 punts for touchdowns. Metcalf's father Terry, was a standout running back for the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Redskins in the 1970s and early 80s.
14. Which of these teams won its division 7 straight times during the 1970s?

Answer: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams won the NFC West from 1973-1979. This stood as record for consecutive divisional titles for the rest of the century.
15. Hall of Famer Ernie Nevers set the two oldest 20th century NFL records during the same game?

Answer: True

On November 28, 1929, Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals scored a record 40 points against the Chicago Bears by scoring a record 6 rushing touchdowns and kicking 4 extra points. He accounted for all of his teams points in a 40-6 win.
