Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which forward from the Anaheim Ducks, along with prospect Ladislav Smid, was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for star defenseman Chris Pronger?

Answer: Joffrey Lupul

Pronger had requested a trade from the Oilers for undisclosed "personal reasons". Edmonton also received Anaheim's first round draft choice in 2007, a conditional first round pick, and Anaheim's second round pick in 2008.
2. Which of these free agents did not re-sign with his previous club?

Answer: Marc Savard

Savard, who had a big year for the Atlanta Thrashers in 2005-06, signed a four-year deal with the Boston Bruins. Bouillon signed a three-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens. Langenbrunner signed a five-year deal with the New Jersey Devils. Roloson signed a three-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers.
3. Two of the biggest names on the free agent market in the summer of 2006 were Ottawa Senators defensemen Wade Redden and Zdeno Chara. Many were uncertain about the future of both of these defensemen with the club. Where did each of them end up signing?

Answer: Ottawa re-signed Redden; Chara signed elsewhere

Redden signed a two-year deal before the first day of free agency began on July 1st. Chara signed a five-year deal with the Boston Bruins on July 1st.
4. Which team that had a poor record in the 2005-06 season, made a big splash in the first few days of free agency by signing defenseman Jay McKee and forwards Doug Weight, Dan Hinote, and Bill Guerin?

Answer: St. Louis Blues

The Pens were quiet the first couple days when all the activity was going on until signing defenseman Mark Eaton on the third day of free agency. The Caps signed defenseman Brian Pothier on day 1 but not really any other big-namers. The Hawks signed goalie Patrick Lalime the first day but were relatively quiet the rest of the way.

The Blues, who had the worst record in the NHL in 2005-06, were able to spend more money because the sale of the team had been completed.
5. Which of the following players who was on the '06 Stanley Cup winning Carolina Hurricanes team re-signed with the club?

Answer: Niclas Wallin

Wallin signed a four-year deal. Cullen and Ward both signed with the New York Rangers. Gerber signed a three-year deal with the Ottawa Senators.
6. What team was star goaltender Roberto Luongo traded to?

Answer: Vancouver Canucks

In addition to Luongo, the Florida Panthers traded defenseman Lukas Krajicek and a sixth round pick in the 2006 draft to the Canucks for infamous forward Todd Bertuzzi, young goaltender Alex Auld, and defenseman Bryan Allen. It had been known for a while that Luongo wanted out of Florida and would likely be traded. Shortly after being traded to the Canucks, he signed a four-year deal.
7. The Minnesota Wild upgraded their team a good deal during the offseason. Which of these players did they not add to their team in the summer of 2006?

Answer: Ed Jovanovski

Demitra was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for prospect Patrick O'Sullivan and a first round pick in the 2006 draft. Parrish and Johnsson were signed. Minnesota's most important signing, however, was talented forward Marian Gaborik, who the team had been having contract issues with. Jovo signed with the Phoenix Coyotes.
8. Which team had an astounding 12 players originally file for arbitration during the 2006 offseason?

Answer: Buffalo Sabres

The players who filed were Maxim Afinogenov, Daniel Briere, Brian Campbell, Tim Connolly, J.P. Dumont, Paul Gaustad, Ales Kotalik, Toni Lydman, Adam Mair, Andrew Peters, Jason Pominville, and Henrik Tallinder. However, only Briere, Dumont, and Mair went through arbitration, as the others signed deals prior to their hearings. Briere and Dumont each received awards that were higher than expected, and the Sabres even walked away from Dumont's award, causing him to become an unrestricted free agent.
9. Star forward Patrik Elias re-signed with the New Jersey Devils.

Answer: True

Elias was one of the hottest names on the market in 2006. On the first day of free agency, he signed a lengthy seven-year deal with the Devils.
10. Which of these players signed for longer than one year?

Answer: Doug Weight

Weight, who won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in the spring of '06, re-signed with his old team, the St. Louis Blues for two years. Straka and Numminen each re-signed with their old teams, the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres, respectively.

After a horrendous season in 2005-06 with the LA Kings, Roenick said he wanted to sign with a Canadian team to focus more on hockey, but he signed with the Phoenix Coyotes, where he played for five seasons from 1996 to 2001.
