The legendary Gordie Howe played for the Red Wings. Many consider Gordie the "Babe Ruth" of the NHL. His records stood a very long time until Wayne Gretzky showed up. Wayne Gretzky's favorite player when he was a kid was Gordie Howe. Detroit has had many other legends play for them as well. Players like Alex Delvecchio, Ted Lindsey, Red Kelly, Sid Abel, Terry Sawchuck, Mickey Redmond, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Nicholas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Marian Hossa, Chris Chelios, Brett Hull and many more.

They were the first team ever to sweep out the playoffs. They did that in 1952. The team went through both the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens. The octopus represents the eight wins. One leg per win.

Wayne Gretzky is the "Great One". This team is thought to be one of the greatest NHL teams of all-time. Their fast paced and attack style reminded some of the old Montreal Canadiens. Nobody dominated the 1980s like the Oilers. Many greats played on this team.
