Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known simply as "the comeback", this 1993 NFL playoff game featured the Houston Oilers, who led 35-3 two minutes into the third quarter. Which team incredibly came back to take the game 41-38 in an overtime victory?

Answer: Buffalo Bills

Leading 7-3 at quarter time, the Oilers piled on 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding 25 point half time lead, which was soon extended to 32. An amazing 28-7 third quarter going the other way suddenly turned the match into an enthralling contest.
2. The 2005 UEFA soccer champions league looked headed for a predictable finish when AC Milan held a 3-0 lead at half time over Liverpool. But what happened in the second half?

Answer: Liverpool tied it at 3-3 and then won on penalties

Many of Liverpool's fans left the ground at half time assuming the match was unwinnable. The club was in the middle of a very poor domestic season and there seemed little hope, until they scored 3 unanswered goals, and then won on penalties with one memorable save from goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.
3. In the 10,000m final of the 1972 Olympics, Finland's Lasse Viren fell and did not look capable of even completing the race. But what amazing feat did he achieve?

Answer: He won in world record time

Viren, a relative unknown to that point, was not expected to win, let alone run a world record. He went on to also win the 5,000m and in case that wasn't impressive enough, he also ran the marathon and finished fifth.
4. Which cyclist was given a 40 percent chance of surviving from testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain in 1996, but then went on to win seven Tour de France events a few short years later?

Answer: lance armstrong

Armstrong's career has been shrouded in controversy, with many claiming he won these events through drug doping. Nonetheless, to come back from such a diagnosis is an incredible achievement and testament to the human spirit.
5. In 2006, Australia broke a long-standing one day cricket record by posting 434 runs against South Africa (the first time any team has ever scored 400 or more runs in a single match). What happened next?

Answer: South Africa scored 438, winning with a ball to spare

Australia's amazing score of 434 was eclipsed within the same incredible match, making it one of the shortest-lived sporting records of all time. Interestingly, no player managed to score a double-century despite the huge scores. South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs top scored with 175 from 111 balls.
6. Which tennis player, nearing the end of his career, finally managed a Wimbledon victory in 2001 despite his wildcard entry from outside the top 100 players?

Answer: Goran Ivanisevic

Croatia's Ivanisevic had previously been runner-up at Wimbledon three times. His rain-interrupted match against Tim Henman in the semi-final took several turns (including a 6-0 loss in the third set) before he sealed victory to advance to his fourth final.

He defeated Pat Rafter from Australia in a gripping five set match to overcome some incredible odds and become the first wildcard entry to win at any Grand Slam event.
7. Which race car driver lost the 1976 Formula One world championship by a single point, despite spending a substantial part of it in a coma?

Answer: Nikki Lauda

Austria's Lauder survived a serious crash which left him with severe burns and lung damage due to inhalation of toxic fumes. While he initially walked away, he collapsed and was in a coma for some time. The crash only took him out of racing for two months, following which he returned to lose the championship by the slimmest margin. He did, however, go on to win the 1977 championship.
8. In 2004, the Boston Red Sox made an impressive comeback by winning the AL Championship vs. New York Yankees after being 0-3 down in the best of seven series. They went on to whitewash the St Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the World Series to break a very long drought: when was the last time they had won the World Series prior to this win?

Answer: 1918

Many had thought that the Red Sox looked down and out when they trailed 4-3 in the bottome of the 9th inning in Game 4 - Boston tied the game 4-4 and won 6-4 in the 12th inning. They won the next 3 games to take the AL title and play the St Louis Cardinals in the WS.

The 86-year run without a win was finally broken, much to the delight of many long-suffering fans. The Red Sox beat the St Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the best of seven World Series.
9. Ice Hockey's famous comeback known as the 'Miracle on Manchester' (April 1982) was made possible by Wayne Gretzky's team, the Edmonton Oilers, scoring 5 goals in the final period.

Answer: False

In an end of season pay-off game, it was Gretzky's team that took a 5-1 lead into the final period. But their opponents, the LA Kings, managed to pile on an amazing 5 unanswered goals to take the match 6-5. This was third game in a best of five series, which was won 3-2 by the LA Kings.
10. September 1952- Rocky Marciano was all but beaten after 12 rounds of his boxing match against the then champ Joe Walcott. How did his amazing comeback eventuate?

Answer: He won with a single knockout punch

Marciano waited patiently for the right moment before landing the perfect right hook to knock the champ down and out in the 13th Round. He went into this bout with a 42-0 record and won the World Heavyweight title. His last bout was three years later in September 1956. He retired in April 1956 with an amazing undefeated career of 49 bouts for 49 wins (of which 43 were by KO).
