Answer: August 1953

'Our Nige' was born in a tiny town of Upton-on-Severn and christened Nigel Ernest James Mansell.
2. What happened in Nigels first ever karting race?

Answer: Engine Fell Off

Amazingly, the engine did fall off. The kart was real cheap, and Nigel was very inexperienced. But he learned a lot on that one day.

Yes, even the team owner of Unipart said his engine supplier were crap. The engines were at least 20hp down on all their rivals

Andrea de Cesaris has quite a reputation for crashing, earning the nickname 'de Crasheris.' Nigel would fight back from the injury to test a Lotus car only a couple of months later, and get the testing job.

The mechanics had spilt fuel into the cockpit and poured water on it. Instead of it being a cure, it enhanced the pain and Nigel continued to drive for 40 laps, suffering from burns to his back, buttocks and legs and spending a night in hospital for his troubles.

Nigel won two races for Ferrari in 1989 - on his debut for the team at Jacarapagua in Brazil and then the Hungarian Grand Prix with the infamous pass on Ayrton Senna. He also won the 1990 Portuguese Grand Prix before moving back to Williams for 1991.
