Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first World Series in 1903 was won by the Boston Americans from the American League. Which National League team lost that year?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates lost the Series 5-3 in a "best of nine games" tournament. Most other World Series tournaments were played in a "best of seven games" style.
2. In the ten-year span from 1947-1956, teams from the American League won the World Series eight times. Of those, the New York Yankees won the Series seven times. Which fierce rival lost the World Series to the Yankees five of those times?

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers

The Brooklyn Dodgers were rivals until the team moved west to become the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1957. Until they moved, the Dodgers were fierce "crosstown rivals" of the Yankees. Fans of either team could see all World Series games by simply going to a stadium across town (as opposed to across the country once the Dodgers made their move).
3. Which team lost the World Series in 1994?

Answer: No team lost.

There were no winners OR losers at the 1994 World Series. The competition was not held that year due to a players' strike that interfered with that season.
4. In 1992 and 1993, the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series. These two years are the only two that saw a non-US team win the championship during the 20th century. Which teams lost to the Blue Jays during these two World Series, sending the championship north of the border?

Answer: Atlanta Braves (1992) and Philadelphia Phillies (1993)

Most of the Blue Jays players have been from the United States and other countries outside of Canada. However, the team is still considered "Canada's Team" by most fans in Canada despite the fact that it is rare to see a Canadian-born player on the team.
5. The Boston Americans won the first World Series, then were renamed the Red Sox and won the World Series five more times before 1918. That year, they traded Babe Ruth and were said to be "cursed" as a result. They couldn't seem to make it to the World Series, or to win if they got there between 1919 and 2002. How many times did the Boston Red Sox lose in the World Series while they were "cursed" during the first 100 years of the Series?

Answer: 4

Despite having some good teams in the 20th century, the Red Sox had an 86-year gap of not winning in the World Series. They were finally able to break the curse and win the World Series 101 years after they won the first tournament in 1903.
6. Yogi Berra never managed a winning team in the World Series. How many times did he manage a losing team in the competition?

Answer: 2

Despite helping ten teams to win the World Series as a player, Yogi Berra did not have the same luck as a manager. He was never able to lead a team to a World Series victory despite managing the New York Yankees on their World Series attempt in 1964, and the New York Mets in their World Series games in 1973.
7. Over the first fifty years of World Series competitions (1903-1952), the New York Yankees appeared in the most Series. Which team appeared the second most during that fifty-year period?

Answer: New York Giants

The New York Giants played in the second-most World Series tournaments over the first fifty years of the competitions before moving west to become the San Francisco Giants in 1957. The Yankees appeared in thirty-eight World Series Championships over the first fifty years.

The Giants appeared in seventeen World Series matchups between 1903 and 1952. Of these, they won 5 and lost 12 of these championship.
8. The New York Yankees had the most World Series wins over the first 100 years of Major League Baseball. Which team had the second-most World Series wins over the first 100 years of the championship tournament?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis won nine World Series championships over the first 100 years (vs 26 World Series wins for the Yankees during that time). The Cardinals also have the fourth-most appearances over the first 100 years behind the Yankees (38), the Dodgers (18), and the Giants (17).
9. This is the only team to appear only twice in the World Series over the first 100 years of the Series, and lose both times. What is the name of this team?

Answer: San Diego Padres

The Padres are the only team to appear only twice between 1903 and 2002 and lose both times. Miami appeared once during that time, and won the Series that year. The Royals appeared twice during this time, but won one championship. Houston did not appear in the World Series until after the first 100 years (their first appearance was in 2005).
10. Who lost the World Series in the second year that it was scheduled to be played (1904)?

Answer: No team lost

The New York Giants of the National League were set to play the Boston Americans (name changed to the Red Sox in 1908). However, the Giants' owner (John T. Bush) boycotted the Series and refused to allow his team to play an American League team. He considered the American League to be inferior to the National League and would not allow his team to play. Rules were changed before the next season and the World Series must now be played between the top team from the American League and the top team from the National League.
