Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. November 5, 1968: This pitcher won the AL MVP and Cy Young award in the season for throwing a 31-6 record. It was the most won since Grover Cleveland Alexander won 33 games in 1916 for the Phillies. Who was this pitcher in 1968?

Answer: Denny McLain

The others never pitched or even played in the American League. McLain, after going 17-16 in 1967, took the American League by storm with his 31-6 record. His arm along with Mickey Lolich combined for 48 of the Tigers' 103 wins in the season. Denny also tied for the Cy Young award in 1969 with the Orioles' Mike Cuellar.
2. November 2, 1974: The world was shocked to see this 21-season Brave traded to the Brewers, after hitting 733 home runs for the Braves. Who was this slugger?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Ironically, when Aaron was notified of the trade, he was in Japan competing in a home run derby against the great Japanese player, Sadaharu Oh. Aaron won it and it was the first time that Oh had been defeated in a derby. Hank retired with 755 home runs in 1976.
3. November 9, 1960: After turning 70 years old, this manager who took the Yankees to 10 World Series in 12 seasons was fired. Who was this Hall of Fame great?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The others never managed in their career. From 1949-1960, Stengel's Yankees missed only the 1954 and 1959 World Series. After the firing, Casey told reporters at a press conference, "I'll never turn 70 again". After four miserable seasons with the Mets in the 1960s, Casey died at the age of 85 in 1975.
4. November 4, 1976: On this date, the first free-agent draft in baseball history was done. Which team selected Reggie Jackson?

Answer: Montreal Expos

Although the Expos selected Jackson, he signed with the Yankees on November 29th. A good thing for the Yankees as Jackson hit five World Series home runs in the following season.
5. November 21, 1956: This Dodger pitcher became the first in National League history to win the NL MVP and the Cy Young award. Who was he?

Answer: Don Newcombe

The others never played in the National League. 1956 was the first presentation of the award, named after pitching great Cy Young. After going 20-5 the previous season, Don threw a 27-7 season in 1956. Newcombe also won the Rookie of the Year award in 1949. He defeated Sal Maglie for both the MVP and Cy Young awards in 1956.
6. November 26, 1975: This American League Boston Red Sox player was the first Rookie of the Year to also be named the AL MVP in the same season. Who was it?

Answer: Fred Lynn

Lynn played for 17 seasons, and his first six with the Red Sox. He won the rookie award over Red Sox teammate Jim Rice, and the MVP over the Royals' John Mayberry.
7. November 27, 1947: Due to Ted Williams not liking the press, and the press not liking him, he did not win the American League MVP in 1947 even though he won the Triple Crown. Who won the MVP on this date?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

The others never won the MVP award. DiMaggio won it by 202 to 201. One sports writer refused to give Williams a top 10 vote, causing Ted to lose two points. Williams batted .343 with 32 home runs, 181 hits with 118 RBIs. DiMaggio of the Yankees batted .315 with 20 home runs, 168 hits with 97 RBIs. It was Joe's third AL MVP award, while Williams was robbed of his second.
8. November 22, 1957: For the second time in Ted Williams' career, he lost the AL MVP award by one point due to the hate of sportswriters. Who did he lose it to this time?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

The others never won the MVP award or played in the American League. Williams batted .388 with 38 home runs in the season. He lost the MVP by one point to Joe DiMaggio in 1947 also. 1957 was the second of three MVP awards for Mantle of the Yankees.
9. November 23, 1965: After 20 loyal seasons with the Braves, and after winning 20+ games in a season 13 times, the Braves let this 44-year old pitcher go. He signed with the New York Mets in 1965. Who was this Hall of Fame pitcher?

Answer: Warren Spahn

The others all died in the 1950s. Spahn appeared in 19 games with the Mets, then signed with the Giants before season's end, then retired. He won 363 games and matched that with 363 career hits.
10. November 6, 1887: A career Washington Senator pitcher was born on this date. Only Cy Young had won more games than him, but nobody threw more shutouts in their career when he retired. Who was this Hall of Fame pitcher nicknamed 'The Big Train'?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The others weren't born for another almost 50 years. Walter played from 1907-1927. He threw 110 shutouts in his career, and was second in wins with 417 to Cy Young's 511. He was one of the first five inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1936.
