Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Oceania Football Confederation, Oceaniac football's governing body, is known by what abbreviation?

Answer: OFC

OFC was formed in November 1966 and is headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand. Initially, the confederation only consisted of regional heavyweights Australia and New Zealand and the weaker Fiji team. OFC was only confirmed as an official full confederation by FIFA in 1996 and is considered by some to be football's weakest continent internationally.
2. Which heavyweight left Oceania for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in January 2006?

Answer: Australia

Australia actually applied to join the Asian Football Confederation in 1960, 1962, 1972 and 1974, but were denied on each occasion. Participation in OFC reduced their need to transfer to the Asian region, but on 1 January 2006 the Australian Football Federation was finally granted its wish.

The country had cited a need for more competition in World Cup qualifying (New Zealand had been its only realistic challenger in OFC) and a desire to make Oceanic football fairer.
3. In which Oceanic country are Eastern Stars FC based?

Answer: Papua New Guinea

Eastern Stars FC are based in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea; they were formed in 2007 after Milne Bay residents expressed concern that the area lacked a local club. Stars finished as league runners-up in 2010-11 and again in 2011-12.
4. In which OFC country is the FFAS National League the domestic football system?

Answer: American Samoa

FFAS stands for Football Federation American Samoa, the island's governing body. The National League was established in 1981; for the 2012-13 season, the FFAS has introduced a two-tier system with clubs placed in either Division 1 or Division 2. PanSa East FC are the club with the most league titles.
5. Which country won the 2012 OFC Nations Cup, defeating New Caledonia in the final?

Answer: Tahiti

Tahiti defeated New Caledonia 1-0 in the final, thereby earning their first Nations Cup title and becoming the first nation other than Australia and New Zealand to win the tournament.

Struggling with the oppressive heat in Honiara, the host city, favourites New Zealand were eliminated in the semi-finals, losing 2-0 to New Caledonia. Both Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea failed to progress beyond the group stage.
6. Who scored Kiribati's first-ever goal in an international match, when he scored twice from midfield in June 2003?

Answer: Lawrence Nemeia

Nemeia's modest record was achieved in the space of 20 minutes in Kiribati's 3-2 loss to Tuvalu on 30 June 2003. Unfortunately for player and team, Nemeia's goals dried up in the following games, as Kiribati were trounced 12-0 by Fiji and 18-0 by Vanuatu in their remaining 2003 South Pacific Games fixtures.

This 2-3 loss was Kiribati's third international match. Their first two were played in 1979 (also at the South Pacific Games), when they lost 13-0 to Papua New Guinea and then 24-0 to Fiji.
7. AS Tefana are a club from which country?

Answer: Tahiti

Tefana won their first league title in 2005 and followed this success up with back-to-back championships in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 the club reached the final of the OFC Champions League, only losing 3-1 on aggregate to New Zealand's Auckland City.
8. Which of these countries are NOT a full OFC member association?

Answer: Tuvalu

Tuvalu are yet to join OFC as a full member association, but have competed in the South Pacific Games in 1979, 2003 and 2007. In 2011, Tuvalu entered the Pacific Games tournament, recording a 4-0 win over American Samoa and a 1-1 draw with Guam.
9. Which Oceanian nation qualified for the 2006 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup?

Answer: Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands won the right to represent Oceania in the 2006 Beach Soccer World Cup by winning the OFC Qualifying Championship. Nicknamed the "Bilikiki", the team recorded a 5-2 win over Cameroon but conceded double figures against both Uruguay and Portugal. They were eliminated at the group stage on goal difference, with Uruguay scraping through at their expense.
10. Which OFC associate member has never played a match at home?

Answer: Kiribati

Kiribati are unable to host an international as the island nation's only stadium - the Bairiki National Stadium - is unfit for football use as the pitch surface is sand, not grass.
