Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following stadiums never hosted both an American League and a National League team?

Answer: Old Comiskey Park

The first Comiskey Park hosted the White Sox from 1910-1990. It never hosted the Cubs, but did host the Negro American League Chicago American Giants from 1941-1950. Both the NL Cardinals and AL Browns played in Sportsman's Park. Both the NL Phillies and the AL Athletics played in Shibe Park.

The New York Giants (NL), New York Mets (NL), and New York Yankees (AL) all played games at one point in the Polo Grounds.
2. In their first year in the American League, 1961, what was the name of the stadium that hosted the Los Angeles Angels?

Answer: Wrigley Field

The field was originally a minor league field designed to be of similar dimension to Wrigley Field in Chicago.
3. Between 1910 and 2003 how many ballparks had the Philadelphia Phillies called home prior to moving into Citizens Bank ballpark in 2004?

Answer: 3

The Phillies played regularly in Baker Bowl (1895-1938), Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium (same stadium; 1938-1970), and Veterans Stadium (1971-2003).
4. In its final year of use, which of the following NL stadiums had the greatest seating capacity?

Answer: Forbes Field - Pittsburgh

Forbes Field = 35,000, Ebbets Field = 31,902, Crosley Field = 29,603, and Sportsman's Park = 30,500.
5. Which Major League team has not played in a stadium named after its team owner?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates' prior ballparks before moving into PNC Park included Exposition Park, Forbes Field (named after the British general John Forbes, who captured Fort Duquesne and renamed it Fort Pitt during the French and Indian War), and Three Rivers Stadium.

The Dodgers played in Ebbetts Field named after its owner Charles Ebbets and opened in 1913. The Senators played in Griffith Stadium named after its owner Clark Griffith and opened in 1911. The Athletics played in Shibe Park named after its owner Benjamin Shibe and opened in 1909.
6. The Cincinnati Reds once played in a stadium named The Palace of the Fans.

Answer: True

The Reds played in The Palace of the Fans from 1902-1911 prior to moving into Crosley Field. Unfortunately, the Reds won no pennants while playing at The Palace.
7. Which one of these stadiums did not have an occupant who next moved into a domed stadium?

Answer: Sicks Stadium - Seattle

The Seattle Pilots played in Sicks Stadium and moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers in 1970. The Brewers played in County Stadium. The Twins moved to the Metrodome; the Colt 45s became the Astros and played in the Astrodome, and the Blue Jays moved into the Skydome.
8. Prior to moving into Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers played at the Los Angeles Coliseum for 4 seasons. How long was the distance from home plate to the left field foul pole?

Answer: 250 ft

Designed for football, the baseball dimensions were odd. In their first season, the Dodgers erected a 40-foot screen in left field. The right center power alley was originally 440 feet from home plate.
9. The first domed stadium used in the Major Leagues was known by all the following names except ________________.

Answer: Hofheinz Memorial Stadium

Judge Roy Hofheinz was the owner of the Astros when they moved to the Astrodome. The stadium however was never named for him. The official name of the stadium when it was built in 1965 was the Harris County Domed Stadium. It was commonly given the moniker, "The Eighth Wonder of the World". The height of the dome was 208 feet above the field.
10. Which Major League franchise once played in a stadium whose primary tenant was a college team with a nickname of the Terriers?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

When the Atlanta Braves played in Boston, they played in Braves Field from 1915-1952. The Braves moved out of Boston to Milwaukee in 1953. Braves Field was subsequently occupied by Boston University Terrier athletic teams (the football program disbanded however in 1996).

The university renamed the stadium Nickerson Field. The field had also hosted other Boston professional teams including the Boston Patriots (AFL), Boston Minutemen/New England Tea Men (NASL), and the Boston Breakers (USFL).
