Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many major championships did Holland play between 1974 and 2000?

Answer: 11

Holland played the World Cup in 1974, 1978, 1990, 1994 and 1998, and participated in the European Championships in 1976, 1980, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000.
2. How many times Holland was knocked out after penalties?

Answer: 4

Denmark got the better of Holland in the semifinals of Euro '92, at Euro '96 France took the penalties better than Holland did, in 1998 Brazil blocked Hollands advance to the final, and at the infamous Euro 2000 semifinals the Dutch fell victim to Italy.
3. How long did it take the Netherlands to beat West Germany after the 2-1 win in 1956?

Answer: 32 years

And it happened at an appropriate time. The 2-1 win in 1988 was more than just a qualification for the final. It was felt like sweet revenge for the defeat in the 1974 World Cup final.
4. Holland impressed the world in 1974. But it took a narrow escape to get there in the first place. What happened exactly?

Answer: The referee disallowed a valid goal by the Belgians in the last qualifier

Belgium had to beat Holland to qualify for the World Cup. At 0-0 a few minutes from time, they did just that. There was no offside, but referee Khazakov saw it otherwise. Holland shrugged off this scare and advanced to the World Cup.
5. Gerald Vanenburg won 42 caps for Holland. But how many goals did he score?

Answer: 1

Incredible as it may sound, the creative midfielder managed to score only once, in a 5-0 win over Malta in 1983. It was his ninth international.
6. Marco van Basten was top scorer for Holland at Euro '92.

Answer: False

In fact he scored no goals at all there.
7. Except from the lost finals in 1974 (West Germany) and 1978 (Argentina), how many times did Holland lose to the eventual winner between 1974 and 2000?

Answer: Five times

At Euro '76 Holland went down 3-1 against Czechoslovakia. In 1980 Holland lost 3-2 to West Germany. Germany beat Holland 2-1 at the World Cup 1990 and two years later at Euro 92 the Netherlands fell victim to Denmark after penalties. Finally at the World Cup 1994, Holland succumbed to Brazil 3-2.
8. How many times did Holland lose a match (bar those after penalties) in a big tournament between 1974 and 2000?

Answer: 10 times

In World Cups against: West-Germany (1974), Scotland and Argentina (1978), West-Germany (1990) and finally Belgium and Brazil (1994). At European Championships against Czechoslovakia (1976), Germany (1980), the Soviet Union (1988) and England (1996).
9. In the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Holland advanced into the second round without winning a match.

Answer: True

They drew against Egypt (1-1), England (0-0) and Ireland (1-1).
10. A promising career of winger Rob de Wit ended prematurely. What happened?

Answer: He suffered a stroke

It happened on a vacation in Spain in 1986 when he was playing a game of tennis. In a desperate attempt to play again he underwent a special treatment in Sweden, but to no avail.
