Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mark McGwire set a season home run record in 1998 by hitting 70 big ones. He retired with 583 career home runs, just three shy of the great Frank Robinson. How many World Series home runs did Mark hit in his career with the Athletics and Cardinals?

Answer: 1

McGwire made three World Series appearances, and all three with the Athletics. His only shot came in the 1988 series in a loss to the Dodgers.
2. Which Hall of Fame great batted for the Triple Crown twice, yet did not win the MVP in either season?

Answer: Ted Williams

None of others batted for a Triple Crown. Williams was a career Boston Red Sox player, not well-liked by the media because he was private. In his 1942 Triple Crown season, Joe Gordon of the Yankees was presented the award, even though Ted hit twice the home runs, had 13 more hits, scored 53 more runs, and had 34 more RBIs than Gordon. Pretty much the same thing happened to Williams in 1947 when he lost the MVP to Joe DiMaggio. Ted did win two MVP awards in 1946 and 1949, and was runner-up for the award another four times.
3. The Phillies Roy Halladay threw baseball's 20th perfect game in 2010. Of the those 20 perfect games, seven were thrown in the same month of a season. Which month was it?

Answer: May

For an unknown reason, May seemed to be the month for perfectos from Cy Young, Catfish Hunter, Len Barker, David Wells, Dallas Braden, Randy Johnson, and Roy Halladay. Harvey Haddix's 12-inning perfect game in 1960 that he lost in the 13th inning was also a May game. Strangely enough, of all the no-hitters thrown, most were thrown in September by far. Of the others listed, baseball is not played in those months.
4. During Rickey Henderson's record 130 stolen bases in 1982, in how many games did he steal four bases in one game?

Answer: 3

Rickey stole four off pitcher Pat Underwood of the Tigers on May 30, four off the Toronto Blue Jays on June 16, and four off the Brewers' Doc Medich on August 27. He capped his season off by taking three off Vida Blue of the Royals in the final game of the season.
5. Which of these Hall of Famers played in four different professional leagues?

Answer: Hugh Duffy

Hugh was an outfielder, and began his career with the NL 1888 Chicago White Stockings. He played with the Chicago Pirates of the Players League in 1890. The Boston Reds contracted him in 1891 in the American Association. After nine seasons with Boston back in the National League, he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901 in the new American League.

He retired in 1906 with a .326 career batting average.
6. Bypassing college and the Minor Leagues, which of the following pitchers went to the Major Leagues directly from high school, and played for over 20 seasons in the big leagues?

Answer: Mike Morgan

The Oakland Athletics didn't feel that Morgan needed any prep for his Major League career. They drafted him in 1978 out of Valley High School in Las Vegas. Mike set a Major League record for playing with 12 different teams over 22 seasons. He retired with a 141-186 record with eight saves.
7. In 1998, Mark McGwire set a season record by hitting 70 home runs. His longest home run of the season was measured at 545 feet. Which Florida Marlin pitcher gave up this blast?

Answer: Livan Hernandez

It was May 16th, and McGwire's 16th home run of the season. Hernandez gave up a career high 37 home runs in the season also. Livan also gave up number 56 to McGwire. Steve Trachsel of the Cubs gave up the record-breaking season number 61 of Roger Maris on September 8. McGwire closed out the season with Expo Carl Pavano giving up number 70.
8. Which of these baseball commissioners had the post for the longest amount of time?

Answer: Kenesaw M. Landis

Landis was baseball's first real commissioner, reigning for 25 years from November 1920 to November 1944.Giamatti had the position for only five months between April and August 1989. Both Kuhn and Frick had the helm for 15 seasons.
9. Which of these sluggers hit more than one home run in a game, 73 times during their career?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth had a total of 73 multiple home run games in his 22 seasons of play. He had an amazing 69 with the Yankees, three with the Red Sox, and one with the Boston Braves. He retired with 714 home runs.
10. Which player in the 1980s set a record for hitting 24 game-winning RBIs in a season?

Answer: Keith Hernandez

Hernandez of the Mets did this in 1985. After taking the National League MVP Award in 1979, Keith had 91 RBIs with 24 being game-winners in the 1985 season with the Mets. The Mets still finished second in the NL East. The others were all pitchers.
