Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sooners were barely ranked in the top 20 in pre-season polls. But fans were optimistic because of the return of a quarterback who the previous year had rewritten the Sooners' record books for passing stats in a season. Who is the junior-college transfer, whose 2000 accomplishments earned him a runner-up finish in Heisman Trophy voting?

Answer: Josh Heupel

Heupel finished behind Florida State's Chris Weinke in the Heisman balloting, but he received the Walter Camp Award given annually to the nation's best quarterback.
2. The 2000 Oklahoma squad was ranked #14 when it faced its first conference opponent, the University of Kansas. Interestingly, OU's offensive coordinator during the 2000 season was coaching the Jayhawks a few years later. What is that coach's name?

Answer: Mark Mangino

Mangino left the Sooner coaching staff in 2002 to become the Jayhawk's head coach. He earned national Coach of the Year honors in 2007 after leading them to a 12-1 record and their first-ever BCS bowl game.
3. Following a 4-0 start in September, the Sooners faced a formidable schedule of #11-ranked Texas, #2-ranked Kansas State and then #1-ranked Nebraska over a four-week span. With what "literary" nickname was that seemingly suicidal stretch tabbed by fans and the local media?

Answer: The Hunt for Red October

The crimson and cream team colors were worn and flown throughout the state after the squad swept through an October schedule that no coach would wish upon his team. When the Sooners defeated Nebraska on October 28 by a score of 31-14, they replaced the Huskers as the country's top-ranked team.
4. Some pundits proclaimed the Sooners to be "Texas State Champions" following the regular season. How many of OU's wins in 2000 were against schools from the Lone Star State?

Answer: 6

In addition to Big 12 Conference opponents Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor, the Sooners defeated University of Texas-El Paso and Rice University early in the season.
5. What team did Oklahoma have to defeat twice in order to reach the BCS championship game?

Answer: Kansas State

Having survived a tough Wildcat squad on the road by a 41-31 score in October, a rematch between the Big 12 North and South Division champions took place in Kansas City on December 2. OU hung on for a 27-24 victory - and hung on to their #1 ranking and championship hopes.
6. Which Sooner set an Oklahoma record with seven touchdowns in the annual Cotton Bowl showdown against Texas?

Answer: Quentin Griffin

In one of the most lopsided games in series history, the Sooners stunned the Longhorn faithful - and more than a few Sooner fans, too - with a 63-14 shellacking of their Red River rival. Running back Griffin, affectionately called "Q" by Sooner fans, also scored the game's only touchdown in the Orange Bowl against Florida State.
7. The Sooners saw their championship hopes slipping away in College Station, Texas on November 11, as the Aggies twice built a 10-point lead in the second half. Still trailing Texas A&M by three points midway through the fourth quarter, whose 41-yard interception return gave Oklahoma the game-winning touchdown and rescued its undefeated season?

Answer: Torrance Marshall

Marshall had played for two years at Kemper Military Academy and wasn't actively playing or on scholarship when the OU coaching staff lured him back to the gridiron to finish his college career with the Sooners. He also had a timely interception against Florida State in the BCS championship game to offset a Sooner turnover on the preceding play, and was named Orange Bowl MVP.
8. Another nail-biter came in Stillwater when the Sooners closed out the regular season against Oklahoma State University. Which Sooner defender knocked away a Cowboy pass into the end zone on fourth-and-goal to allow OU to escape with a 12-7 win?

Answer: Derrick Strait

Having won only three games in 2000, Oklahoma State was closing out a dismal season and saying farewell to head coach Bob Simmons after the squad failed to post a winning record in any of his last three campaigns there. As often happens, however, Bedlam (the series nickname) brought out the best in the Cowboys, who almost spoiled the Sooners' perfect season.
9. Just days before the title game against heavily-favored Florida State, the leading receiver for the Seminoles was declared academically ineligible. What was the player's name?

Answer: Marvin Minnis

The absence of Minnis, whose nickname was "Snoop", didn't seem so important when the Seminoles struck for a 36-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage on a pass from Chris Weinke to Atrews Bell. The Sooner defense regrouped, though, and shut out the Seminole offense to propel Oklahoma to its seventh national title. Florida State's only points came on a fourth-quarter safety when OU punter Jeff Ferguson recovered a high snap from center in the Sooners' own end zone with only 55 seconds remaining in the game.

It was too little, too late for the defending champion Seminoles. The 13-2 victory brought Oklahoma its first national crown since 1985, and its first undefeated season since 1974.
10. Bob Stoops led the Sooners to an undefeated season and their seventh national title in his second year as head coach. But prior to coming to OU he was part of another national championship as a member of the coaching staff. At what school did he first earn a championship ring?

Answer: Florida

Stoops' first coaching job was as a graduate assistant to Hayden Fry at Iowa, where Stoops had starred as a defensive back. Following stops at Kent State and Kansas State, he took over as Gator defensive coordinator under head coach Steve Spurrier. In his first year there Florida defeated Florida State in the 1996 Sugar Bowl for a national title.
