Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How are college basketball games divided, time-wise?

Answer: two 20-minute halves

In addition, the NCAA uses a 35-second shot clock. When necessary, each overtime period is five minutes long.
2. Which of the following breakdowns would one most likely see in a polo match in the USA?

Answer: six chukkas of seven minutes each

Polo matches are divided into chukkas, or chukkers. According to the Hurlingham rules, a full game of polo consists of 8 seven-minute chukkas, although club matches are often shortened to four or six chukkas. Polo teams consist of four players. Polo ponies are limited to two chukkas per match.
3. If you were to watch the Waterloo Black Hawks play the Sioux City Musketeers in a USHL ice hockey match, how is the full game divided? (It is the same for the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL.)

Answer: three 20-minute periods

As of 2014, 247 former United States Hockey League players had played in the NHL. The 2014-2015 USHL season had 17 teams, nine in the Eastern Division and eight in the Western. Eastern Division teams were the Bloomington Thunder, Cedar Rapids Roughriders, Dubuque Fighting Saints, Green Bay Gamblers, Madison Capitols, Muskegon Lumberjacks, and Youngstown Phantoms, along with Team USA. Western Division teams were the Black Hawks and Musketeers, along with the Des Moines Buccaneers, Fargo Force, Lincoln Stars, Omaha Lancers, Sioux Falls Stampede, and Tri-City Storm.
4. How long are the quarters in a high school varsity football game?

Answer: 12 minutes

High school sports rules are governed by the National Federation of State High School Associations. The NFHS publishes rules for 21 sports, including Spirit (Cheerleading) and "Speech, Debate, & Theatre," according to the NFHS website. Both collegiate and professional football use 15-minute quarters.
5. How long does a college soccer match last?

Answer: two 45-minute halves

Unlike FIFA, where the clock does not stop during a half and extra time is added by the referee after each 45-minute half is played, in NCAA soccer, the clock is stopped for injury and after scores, so that no extra time is added at the end of a half. If a match is still tied after two halves in college soccer, two ten-minute extra periods are played.
6. How long is a high school wrestling match that goes full length and does not require an overtime procedure?

Answer: three two-minute periods

A match starts with a two-minute period, at the beginning of which the two opponents are neutral, or on their feet. In the next two periods each wrestler gets his choice of up (advantage position), down (defensive position), or neutral. Of course, a pin, technical fall, injury default, or disqualification can also end the match before the full six minutes are wrestled.
7. How is an NCAA women's field hockey game divided time-wise?

Answer: two 35-minute halves

The game clock is stopped in field hockey after each score. In addition, each team is permitted one time out per game. If the score is tied at the end of the second half, two 15-minute "Sudden Victory" periods will be conducted. If the score is till tied the winner will be determined by a shoot-out.

In an interesting modification, in NCAA women's overtimes, the two teams play with seven players per side, rather than the 11 players who started the game.
8. Men were playing lacrosse in America before the arrival of Columbus. The Iroquois referred to it as "the little brother of war," and a match between villages could run from sunrise to sunset over three days of play. However, a men's collegiate match today would have what timing parameters?

Answer: four 15-minute quarters

NCAA women's rules set the game at two 30-minute halves.
9. How is a water polo game divided, as played by the USA Waterpolo organization?

Answer: four 8-minute quarters

USA Waterpolo enforces the rules of its parent international federation, the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA). There is a two-minute interval between the first and second periods and the third and fourth periods, with just a five minute interval between the second and third. If the score is tied at the end of regulation a shoot-out will determine the winner.
10. According to the 2014-15 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rule book, how long is a high school basketball game?

Answer: four 8-minute quarters

At least one state, Minnesota, uses a modification of the NFHS rules, in that its high school games consist of two 18-minute halves.
