Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was this former Green Bay Packer offensive tackle, who later took the Bengals as a head coach to a Super Bowl?

Answer: Forrest Gregg

Gregg was an eight-time Pro Bowler with the Packers in the 1960s, and played on five championship teams also. After coaching the Browns for three seasons, the Bengals took Gregg at the helm in 1980. He took the 1981 Cincinnati team with their 12-4 record to the Super Bowl. The Bengals lost to the 49ers, 26-21.
2. In which year did the NFL first have an official team on the West Coast?

Answer: 1926

The Los Angeles Buccaneers joined the NFL in 1926, and finished fifth amongst 22 teams. The Buccaneers did not have a home stadium to play in, so they played an entire season of road games. The team folded after its only season. In 1946, the Cleveland Rams moved to Los Angeles, and the Rams stayed around in Los Angeles until 1994.
3. 1985 was a strange season for the Cleveland Browns. Unsure of their rookie quarterback by the name of Bernie Kosar, the Browns ran a lot in the season. They already had one 1000-yard running back in that season, then the other squeezed through to pass the 1000-yard mark also on the final play of the season. Who was the team's second 1000-yard rusher in that 1985 season?

Answer: Ernest Byner

The others never played for Cleveland. Byner fell short by six yards on what would have been the last play of the season, but the Jets' Joe Klecko committed a penalty, giving the Browns one more last play in the season. The ball was given to Byner, who ran like the wind, ending up with 1002 yards for the season. The other Browns' running back was Kevin Mack who rushed for 1104 yards.
4. I was a defensive back with the Raiders and Chiefs in the AFL. After football, I starred in movies such as, "Black Caesar", and, "Hell Up in Harlem". I also starred in M*A*S*H. Who am I?

Answer: Fred Williamson

Williamson was also an announcer on "Monday Night Football", but it was short-lived. Fred played from 1960-1967 with the Steelers, Raiders, and Chiefs. He was also a three-time Pro Bowler as a defensive back from 1961-1963 with Oakland.
5. I was the head coach of a NFL team for 18 seasons, but I just couldn't win a Super Bowl. I did retire from sports with a NBA title though as a forward for the Lakers. Who am I?

Answer: Bud Grant

6. In 1979, the NFL witnessed for the first time, a team have two 1000-yard receivers. Actually, there were three teams in the season who accomplished this also. This was accomplished by the Chargers, Patriots, and which Tony Hill led team?

Answer: Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys went 11-5 in the season, but lost the NFC Division playoff to the Rams. Hill caught 1062 yards with 10 TDs, while teammate Drew Pearson caught 1026 yards with 8 TDs. Most of the Cowboys arm was provided by quarterback Roger Staubach.
7. I was the last of the 'tough' players in football. I was credited with being the last NFL player to not wear a face mask when I played. I played most of my career with the Eagles, and later was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a wide receiver in 1998. Who am I?

Answer: Tommy McDonald

The others were not wide receivers or ever played for the Eagles. Tommy played from 1957-1968. He was also a Cowboy, Ram, Brown, and Falcon. He caught for 8410 career yards with 84 touchdowns. He led the league in receiving yardage and touchdowns in 1961 with the Eagles.
8. This 1981 Chiefs running back was the AFC Rookie of the Year. Unfortunately, he died in 1983 while attempting to save three children from drowning. Who was he?

Answer: Joe Delaney

Joe rushed for 1121 yards as a rookie in 1981. He was also a Pro Bowler in the season. Injuries kept him down to only half the games in 1982. A little over 20 years after his death in 1983, the Hall of Fame opened their doors to him in 2004.
9. On December 20, 1980, both the Dolphins and Jets closed out their 1980 season in a televised afternoon game. What was strange about this AFC game?

Answer: There were no TV announcers

NBC was the one who broadcasted the game in an experiment that went all wrong with no announcers. By the end of the first quarter, the NBC switchboards were lit up like a Christmas tree with angry fans. The Jets defeated the Dolphins, 24-17.
