Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following did Brooks Robinson accomplish?

Answer: Won 16 Gold Gloves in his career

Brooks was a third baseman and never pitched. Robinson spent his entire 23 season career with Baltimore, from 1955-1977. His 16 Gold Gloves were all consecutive, from 1960-1975. He was also won the AL MVP in 1963. Robinson joined the Hall of Fame in 1983.
2. I was the first pitcher to win four consecutive Cy Young Awards. Who am I?

Answer: Greg Maddux

The others never won a Cy Young Award. Maddux was the first to win three consecutive, but threw a fourth outstanding season for the icing. Maddux, of the Atlanta Braves, won his four from 1992-1995. His streak was broken for a fifth season bid by fellow Brave, John Smoltz, who won the award in 1996.
3. If Babe Ruth had not existed, who would have shared the season home run record for many seasons, until Roger Maris would break it by hitting 61, in 1961?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx and Hank Greenberg

It was Foxx and Greenberg who both smacked 58. Both Foxx of the Philadelphia Athletics, and Greenberg of the Tigers, led or shared the title four times in their career. Foxx hit his 58 in 1932, and Greenberg smacked 58 in 1938. Roger Maris of the Yankees hit 61 home runs in 1961 to break Ruth's record.
4. Which was Dan Quisenberry most famous for?

Answer: Led the league four consecutive seasons with saves

Quisenberry played most of his career with the Kansas City Royals. He won four consecutive Save titles from 1982-1985, after his first in 1980, which all were accompanied with the Rolaids Relief Award. He retired with 244 saves in 1990.
5. Ron Hunt was famous for leading the league in what?

Answer: Led seven seasons in being hit by a pitch

Hunt, of five teams throughout his 12 season career, led the league seven consecutive seasons, and set a season record for being hit 50 times in 1971 with the Expos. Other than being hit 50 times in that season, he legitimately walked only eight other times. He retired with 243 HBP's.
6. The batting average that I hit in 1924, was the highest batting average in all the 20th century. Who am I?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Hornsby, of the St. Louis Cardinals, hit over .400 for the second time in his career in 1924. Batting .424, he was runner-up to the season MVP behind Dazzy Vance of Brooklyn.
7. In an unselfish honor, I set a career record of 512 sacrifice hits, just to advance my fellow baserunners. I also won a season MVP, and led the league three times in runs scored. Although my nickname was "Cocky", I don't think that I was. Who am I?

Answer: Eddie Collins

Although the nickname may have fit the others, nobody else listed sacrificed more than 125 times in their career. When Collins retired in 1933 after 25 seasons, he held the record for Sac Hits, which stood throughout the entire 20th century. He never led in a season though. He was the AL MVP in 1914 with the Athletics of Philadelphia.
8. Which was Satchel Paige most noted for?

Answer: Oldest player in the 20th century

Paige never led a major category in pitching in his entire Major League career, but he was the oldest player at age 58. In 1965, the Kansas City Athletic pitched three innings and allowed only one hit. With a career pitching record of 28-31, he was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1971. Paige unofficially won over 2500 games in the Negro League.
9. In addition to my 14 World Series appearances, I was a season MVP three times in my career. Seven times I was in the top five voting for the MVP. I was also sandwiched between the batter and the umpire most of my career. Who am I?

Answer: Yogi Berra

The others never played the 'catcher sandwich'. Berra, all 19 seasons with the Yankees except for four games, had a World Series record of 10-4. He was the AL MVP in 1951, 1954, and 1955. His final four games of his career were with the Mets in 1965.
10. I won 12 strikeout crowns. Five of those were consecutive, and also in both leagues. I 'express' myself as the greatest strikeout king of all-time. Who am I?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

All listed won season strikeout crowns, but it was the 'Ryan Express' who won two with the Astros in 1987 and 1988, then moving to Texas and winning three more from 1989-1991. Ryan was the first pitcher in history to reach the 5000 strikeout mark, retiring with 5714.
