Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Clive Churchill, stalwart of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, was one of the greatest to ever play "The Greatest Game of All". What was his position?

Answer: Fullback

Possibly South's number one "No. 1" (Fullback), Clive Churchill was nicknamed "The Little Master". He hailed from Newcastle originally and played over 90 consecutive representative matches for Australia from the late 30s to the early 50s.
2. Which team, who entered the League in 1908, were the favourites for the 1943 Premiership, but lost to Newtown in the Grand Final?

Answer: North Sydney

North Sydney had beaten Newtown during the 1943 season, but, due to injuries went down 34-7 in the final. Since 1922, North Sydney had reached the semi-finals eleven times, their best effort was 1943, when they finished as runners-up.
3. Which team, who entered the Premiership in 1908, won the Grand Final in 1933 and had to wait another decade before winning again?

Answer: Newtown

From the inception of Rugby League in Australia, Newtown were known as the Battling Blues, one player in the 1940s hoped that his players bonus would buy him a new suit (about $5 in those days). Later their fans nicknamed them the Bluebags and the name stuck, for a time. They subsequently became the Newtown Jets.
4. Which two teams played in the first Grand Final to be broadcast on radio in Australia (the winning score was 3-0)?

Answer: Balmain and South Sydney

In 1924 the Grand Final was played midweek, a first for Rugby League as was the broadcast on radio. Balmain's win over Souths was more luck than good management - two certain tries to Souths were bombed with one player dropping the ball over the line and the other missing the final pass completely!
5. South Sydney won consecutive Premierships between 1925 and 1932?

Answer: False

South Sydney won consecutive Premierships between 1925 and 1929, they lost to Western Suburbs (the first Premiership for the Magpies) in 1930, but won again in 1931 and 1932.
6. The "Club Championship" was introduced in 1930. Which club, who entered the League in 1908, won the inaugural "Club Championship"?

Answer: Eastern Suburbs

Eastern Suburbs won the Club Championship again in 1931, missed a few years and won consecutive Club Championships between 1934 and 1937.
7. Which team caused the League to change the rules to give Minor Premiers a second chance (if beaten in the semi-finals) to contest the further finals series?

Answer: St George

The mighty St George Dragons, pre-glory days, were Minor Premiers in 1927 and played Souths in one of the semi-finals. It was 5-5 at full time, but in extra time, Souths scored a further 11 points. Minor Premiers didn't get a second chance in those days but, in 1928, the League changed the system so that Minor Premiers got a second chance if beaten in a semi-final.
8. In what year was a Grand Final required to decide the Premiership, in Western Suburbs favour?

Answer: 1930

Western Suburbs were the Minor Premiers but were beaten by St George in the Final. In the Grand Final, Wests turned the tables on St George, winning 27-2.
9. Canterbury-Bankstown (as they were known) won their first Premiership in which year?

Answer: 1938

Canterbury-Bankstown entered the competition in 1935. In their first year they suffered two of their greatest losses, the first to St George, 91-6 (St George's greatest win) and their second to Eastern Suburbs, 87-7.
10. In 1938 and 1939 which team, who joined the League with a horror year of massive losses in 1935, won the Club Championship?

Answer: Canterbury-Bankstown

After their horror first year in 1935, Canterbury-Bankstown bought many players in from the "bush" to boost their ranks. Critics commented that the CB on their jerseys must have stood for "country bumpkins".
