Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1927 New York Yankees was nicknamed 'Murderers Row'. The team had a lot of talent with their own nicknames also. Who had the nickname of 'Biscuit Pants'?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Wearing the number 4, Gehrig also had the nickname 'Iron Horse' from his consecutive game playing streak from 1925-1939. Biscuit Pants was a cruel nickname given by a news reporter who saw Lou trip and fall down while wearing pants that were too big for him in his very early Yankee days. Ruth was nicknamed 'Babe', 'Sultan of Swat', 'Bambino', and other names. Combs was nicknamed 'The Kentucky Colonel', and Pennock was 'The Knight Of Kennett Square'.
2. Manager Tom Lasorda won the first-ever National League Manager of the Year Award in 1983. Which team did he manage at the time?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

They were in Brooklyn from 1884-1958. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958. While Lasorda won the first National League Award in 1983, manager Tony LaRussa won the first award for the American League when he took his Chicago White Sox to a first place finish.
3. Which of the following pitchers threw more than four no-hitters in their career?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Ryan spent 27 seasons in the big leagues from 1966-1993. He pitched with four teams throughout his career of 324 wins, the Mets, Angels, Astros, and Rangers. He was the first pitcher to throw 5000 strikeouts. Strangely enough, Nolan never won a MVP or Cy Young Award in his career. Young was mainly a Cleveland Spider in the 1890s, Koufax a Dodger, and Carlton never threw a no-hitter.
4. Who was the first Boston Red Sox player to retire with over 500 career home runs?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Foxx began his career with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1925, and retired with the Phillies in 1942. In-between were seven seasons with the Red Sox. Jimmie was the second player in baseball history to hit 500 home runs, behind the immortal Babe Ruth. He retired with 534.
5. Which Major League team was the first to appear in four World Series in the same decade?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The Athletics appeared four times in the promised land in the 1910s decade from 1910-1914. They defeated the Cubs in 1910, the Giants in 1911 and 1913, then lost to the Boston Braves in 1914. With the first World Series being held in 1903, the Cubs appeared in three between 1903-1909.

The Tigers were in three consecutive from 1903-1909. The Yankees were the first to appear in five, then six in the same decade. They made their first-ever World Series appearance in 1921 against the New York Giants.

The Yankees would lose, then lose to the Giants again in 1922. In 1923, things would be different, including the team having the new 'The House that Ruth Built', Yankee Stadium. They defeated the Giants this time in the series four games to two.

They would also appear in the promised land in 1926 in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, then wins in 1927 and 1928 against the Pirates and Cardinals, respectively. The Yankees also appeared in the World Series five times in the 1930s, five times in the 1940s, eight times in the 1950s, and five times in the 1960s.
6. Which of the following pitching greats won seven Cy Young awards in their career?

Answer: Roger Clemens

The Cy Young Award didn't begin presentations until 1956. Clemens won three Cy Youngs with the Red Sox, two with the Blue Jays, one with the Yankees, and one with the Astros. Roger won 354 games in his career, leaving baseball in 2007 under allegations of illegal substance usage. Johnson won five, Gibson won two with the Cardinals, and Mathewson played decades before the award was presented.
7. Which of the following players went through their entire Major League career with only one team?

Answer: Jim Palmer

Palmer was the Orioles' golden boy as a rookie in 1965. Over 19 seasons, "Cakes" as he was nicknamed, won three Cy Young awards and won 268 games. He helped Baltimore to six World Series appearances, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990. He later became a sportscaster. Henderson played with nine teams, Perry played with eight teams, and Cuellar with five.
8. Who was the first Philadelphia Phillies player to win a World Series MVP Award?

Answer: Mike Schmidt

The World Series MVP Award began being given out in the 1955 World Series, with Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres taking the inaugural award. It would not be until 1980 that the Phillies would have a chance with one of their own winning the award. The team had been World Series dry since 1950.

In 1980, they met the Kansas City Royals in the big series, and won it all four games to two. Schmidt, the slugging third baseman, batted .381 and hit two home runs in the promised land. He also retired with three National League MVP awards in 1989. Mike was an easy induction into the Hall of Fame in 1995 with his 548 career home runs.

The others never played for the Phillies.
9. Three of these baseball greats wore the number 24 in their careers. Which one did not?

Answer: Don Drysdale

Drysdale pitched his entire career with the Dodgers. He won the Major League Cy Young Award when it was presented to only one pitcher in baseball in 1962. Don wore the number 53. It was Drysdale who started the scenario of, "You hit one of my players, I hit two of yours".

He retired in 1969 after 14 Dodger seasons, then was inducted into the hall in 1984. Don died in Montreal in 1993. Willie Mays was most noted for his number 24 with the Giants. Henderson wore the 24 with many teams, and Bonds wore it with the Pirates before going to San Francisco, then wearing number 25 on his back.
10. Which 23-year old catcher won National League Rookie of the Year honors in 2010?

Answer: Buster Posey

The catcher Posey played in only seven games in the 2009 season, not qualifying for any award. The Giants made room for Buster by trading veteran catcher Benjie Molina to the Texas Rangers in July. Posey batted .305 with 18 home runs in 2010 to win the award over Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward.
