Rules Level The Playing Field Trivia Quiz

Rules in sport give competitors a level playing field. Pardon the pun. Here are rules from 10 sports to try out. I've used imperial or metric measurement as per the sport's ruling body's website.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The diameter of an ice hockey puck is 3 inches (7.62cm).

Answer: True

The diameter is 7.62 cm or 3". The puck must be 2.54cm (1") thick and its weight must be 156 to 170gms (5.5 to 6oz). Any logo or advertising material on the puck cannot be larger than 4.5cm (1.77 in). Both sides of the puck may have material printed on them however. I'm not sure how you're supposed to see the printing on the puck as it's hurtling around the rink but rules are rules!
Thanks to the International Ice Hockey Federation's website for the information.
2. Which of the following measurements would be an acceptable circumference for a basketball used in a men's basketball competition?

Answer: 750 mm

A basketball in any men's game must have a circumference of 749-780mm (29.5-30.7inches). It must weigh 567 to 650g (20 - 22.9 ounces). In women's games the ball is slightly smaller and lighter.
Thanks to FIBA, The International Basketball Federation for the information.
3. The goal in a game of football/soccer is 8 yards (7.32m) wide?

Answer: True

The goalmouth is 8 yards (7.32m) wide and the height is fixed at 8 ft (2.44m) to the lower edge of the crossbar. The goal posts, crossbar and lines on the field must be the same dimension which cannot exceed 5 inches (12 cm). The net behind the goal is optional but if fitted it must not interfere with the goalkeeper's work.
Thanks to the FIFA (The Fédération Internationale de Football Association) website for the information.
4. How high above the ground is the centre of the target in an archery competition?

Answer: 130 cm

The bullseye must be 130cm (51.2in) from the ground. Different size targets are used for different competitions. The target is 122cm (48in) in diameter for the 60m, 70m and 90m men's competitions. An 80cm (31.5in) target is used for 30m, 40m and 50m men's competitions (with one exception, the Standard Bow round).
Thanks to the International Archery Federation/Federation Internationale de Tir A L'Arc (FITA) website for the information.
5. How many times does a human steeplechaser have to jump over an obstacle in a 3,000m steeplechase?

Answer: 35

In a 3,000m steeplechase there are 28 hurdle jumps. If that's not difficult enough there are 7 water jumps to overcome to reach the finish line. A 2,000m race sounds easier as there are only 18 hurdle jumps and 5 water jumps.
Thanks to the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) website for the information.
6. How long is it from one base line to the other on a tennis court?

Answer: 78 feet

The rules specify the court must be rectangular and 78 feet (23.8m) long. For singles matches the court is 27 feet (8.23m) wide. For doubles matches the area in the "tramlines" is included which then makes the court 36 feet (10.97 m) wide.
Thanks to the International Tennis Federation's website for the information.
7. Measured at right angles to the pitch, and from the centre of the cricket pitch, what is the minimum distance between the boundaries for a Test Match?

Answer: 150 yards

From one square boundary to the other must be at least 150 yards (137.2m). A cricket oval can be almost round to quite oval in shape. The Sydney Cricket Ground is fairly circular but The Adelaide Oval is just that - very oval in comparison. The pitch isn't necessarily in the exact middle of the ground so the distance from the centre of the pitch to the boundaries can be different.

The shorter of the two boundaries cannot be shorter than 65 yards (59.9m) though. The distance from the pitch to the boundary at ends of the pitch must be at least 70 yards (64 metres). No boundary can be longer than 90 yards (82.29m) from the centre of pitch. Thanks to the International Cricket Council's website for the information.
8. When about to throw a dart you should stand behind a board called an oche. How far from the dart board is the oche?

Answer: 7 feet 9 inches

The oche should be 38 mm high and 610 mm long. The rear end of it must be 2.37 metres (7'9") from the dartboard. Players may not tread on the oche. The centre of the dartboard must be 173 cm (5'8") from the floor and the rear of the oche (measured diagonally) shall be 294 cm (9' 7.5") from the centre of the board. That's more information than I needed to know!

Information courtesy of the World Darts Federation's website. There is also the International Darts Federation, another ruling body. The rules seem similar to both organisations though the IDF doesn't specify the existence of the oche, a line on the floor sufficing.
9. In this sport a level playing field is an essential for safety. We all know that the largest sporting field is a polo field but just how long is a regulation polo field?

Answer: 300 yards

A full size polo field is 300 yards (274m) long and either 160 or 200 yards (146 or 183m) wide. The width is determined by whether or not the field is boarded on the edges (presumably for spectator safety); the wider dimension is used when the field is boarded. The goals are 8 yards (7.3m) wide and the goalposts must be at least 10 feet (3m) high. The goalposts must be at least 250m (229m) apart.
Information from the Federation of International Polo website.
10. You've seen people throwing a great lump of granite down the ice in the sport of curling. Just how heavy is the piece of granite?

Answer: 44 pounds

Curling stone must be anywhere between 38lbs and 44lbs including the bolt and handle. The standard weight used in competitions though is 44lbs (19.96kg). It is "thrown" and then guided down the ice over 100 feet to the target. The best stones are made of close and evenly grained granite and can cost up to $1,500.
Thanks to the World Curling Federation's website for the information.
