Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first-ever pair of NFL teammates to rush 1000 yards each did it in 1972. One of the 1000-yard pair was Mercury Morris, but who was the other?

Answer: Larry Csonka

The Dolphin's perfect 1972 season culminated in victory at Super Bowl VII, when they beat the Washington Redskins by 14 points to 7. This was coupled with the achievement of Morris and Csonka who became the very first 2000-yard pair. Originally, Morris was recorded as rushing 991 yards, but a league inquiry, requested by the team, led to his being awarded another 9 yards giving him an exact 1000. Csonka's total for the 1972 season was 1117 yards.
2. Of the first five NFL teams to have two players rush 1000 yards in a season, only one pair of teammates included a quarterback. Which team was this?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

In 2006, Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn were not just the first-ever 2000-yard pair to include a quarterback. They were also one of the QB/RB pairs of teammates who helped the Falcons set the record of having a QB/RB pair make over 100 yards each, in one game, and twice in one season. Vick and Dunn made over 100 yards each in one game, then Vick and Jerious Norwood were the other pair.
3. Of NFL teams to have two players each rush 1000 yards in a season, only two of them managed the feat in a 14-game season. One of them was the Miami Dolphins in 1972, but who was the other team?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

In 1976, Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier each rushed over 1000 yards for the Steelers. The Steelers failed to make it to the Super Bowl that season, in spite of being two-time defending champions. They lost to the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship game, when both Harris and Bleier were out injured.
4. The Cleveland Browns became the third NFL team to have two players rush over 1000 yards each in 1985. Who was spending his first full year as head coach with them at the time?

Answer: Marty Schottenheimer

Having been their defensive co-ordinator since 1980, Marty Schottenheimer became the head coach for the Browns midway through the 1984 season after the team parted company with Sam Rutigliano. He held the post until 1988, and then moved on to become head coach for the Kansas Chiefs from 1989-1998.
5. In 2008, the New York Giants became the fifth team to have two players rush over 1000 yards each in a season. Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward took the honours. Who was the only other member of the 2008 Giants' team to get into triple-figures for yards rushed with 355?

Answer: Ahmad Bradshaw

The Giants running back trio of Jacobs, Ward, and Bradshaw were affectionately known as "Earth, Wind, and Fire", respectively by their fans. Bradshaw also took the honour of the longest run of the Giants' 2007 season, when he made an 88-yard score for a touchdown. He did it against the Buffalo Bills.
6. Rocky Bleier was one of the two Pittsburgh Steelers players to rush 1000 yards in the same season. Although he is most associated with the jersey number 20, which jersey number did Bleier wear during his rookie season?

Answer: 26

After his rookie season was over in 1968, Bleier was drafted and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was wounded in both legs, but regained his team place with dedication, training, and determination. While Bleier had been away, his rookie number 26 was worn by Preston Pearson, so Bleier took up the number 20 jersey on his return to the team in 1974. Even though Pearson left the Steelers for the Dallas Cowboys in 1975, Bleier kept the number 20.
7. Cleveland Brown Earnest Byner was one of their two team members to rush over 1000 yards in the 1985 season. In-between two stints as a player for the Browns, which other NFL team did Byner play for?

Answer: Washington Redskins

After being picked in the 10th round of the 1984 NFL draft by the Browns, Byner was traded to the Redskins for the 1989 season. During his time with the Redskins, he played for their winning team at Super Bowl XXVI before returning to the Browns in 1994. Byner also played for the Baltimore Ravens until his retirement in 1997.

In 2008, Byner took up the post of running backs coach for the Tennessee Titans. It was during the 1985 season that Byner and teammate Kevin Mack achieved over 1000 rushing yards each.
8. Of the 10 players who formed the first five pairs of NFL teammates to each rush 1000 yards in the same season, two were among the first 25 modern era running back inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Who were they?

Answer: Larry Csonka and Franco Harris

Larry Csonka was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987, then Franco Harris joined him in 1990. The Pro Football Hall of Fame was founded in Canton, Ohio, in 1963.
9. One NFL team has twice come close to achieving a 2000-yard rushing pair, but missed out both times in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1973 and 1988, they had two players who made over 900 yards in a season. Which team was this?

Answer: Cincinnati Bengals

In 1973, Bengals Essex Johnson and Boobie Clark both took their total yardage to over 1000 once the postseason games were included, but didn't make it in regular season play. In 1988, it was Ickey Woods and James Brooks who managed to get over 1000 yards each for the Bengals, but only with postseason play included.

The Atlanta Falcons also had two seasons in which two players made over 1000 yards each once the postseason yardage was included, before they made it to 2000 yards in the 2006 regular season.

In 1980, they were William Andrews and Lynn Cain, and in 2004 they were Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn.
10. Of the 10 NFL players who formed the first five 2000-yard rushing pairs, three have been convicted on felony charges. Which of these players was not one of them?

Answer: Warrick Dunn

Mercury Morris (1972 Miami Dolphins) and Kevin Mack (1985 Cleveland Browns) were both convicted on cocaine charges. Michael Vick (2006 Atlanta Falcons) was convicted on dog fighting charges.
