Arkansas, formerly of the old Southwest Conference, and South Carolina, formerly from the Atlantic Coast Conference, were added in 1992. Their addition brought the total number of teams in the SEC to 12, paving the way to the SEC Championship Game.

Answer: Johnny Vaught

John Howard Vaught, who replaced Harold Drew in 1947, and introduced the Split-T in the Deep South, complied a 13 record of 101-29-6. In 1960, his Ole Miss Rebels went 9-0-1, and won the SEC Championship.

Billy Cannon, winner of the 1959 Heisman Trophy, led LSU to an 8-0-2 record, and the Southeastern and National Championships. LSU finished the season by defeating Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, 7-0 (played Jan 1st 1959). Auburn, who was ineligible, finished 9-0-1.

In 1927, members of Sigma Iota, an Ole Miss honorary society, first proposed the Golden Egg. As thoughts of the 1926 game, Sigma Iota proposed that a trophy be awarded in a dignified ceremony designed to calm excited fans. One proposal that was rejected was to send the goal posts to the winning side each year.

When the first Golden Egg Bowl was played, Mississippi State was known as Mississippi A&M.
