Scandals in Sports Trivia Quiz

I used to watch Sports Center on ESPN as an escape, and to get away from the news that could otherwise be known as the "bad news". Unfortunately, Sports Center is the business for big ratings and acts like the news now. Scandals are on and off the field.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many months did Michael Vick end up being sentenced to prison after he plea bargained with the federal authorities and was convicted of dog fighting charges, and killing the dogs that did not perform?

Answer: 23 months

Vick started his jail time early but the judge imposed a harsher sentence then the prosecutors even asked for.
2. What is the name of the NBA referee that pleaded guilty ot two charges of match fixing?

Answer: Tim Donaghy

His NBA experience as a referee was 772 regular-season games in 13 seasons. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison on each charge (served concurrently) -- wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. He was the ref at the "Malace at the Palace" where Ron Artest went into the stands as well as the Suns-Spurs controversial series last year.

He did not admit to fixing any particular game.
3. Sean Taylor of the Washington Redskins was gunned down in his Florida home on November 26th, 2007. Which of the following statements is *NOT* true in the aftermath of this tragedy?

Answer: The NFL let them move their Thursday game to Monday to mourn

Sean Taylor was a great college player at the University of Miami and the #5 overall pick by the Washington Redskins. He was no angel and had plenty of problems with the law including pulling a gun on someone. Unfortunately, it is possible that the people he associated with would not let him disassociate.

This was stated by Antrel Rolle of the Cardinals that knows him and went to school with him.. He has had warnings in Miami. The police are still under the impression it was a burglary. The NFL, with all the money it makes, made them play their Sunday Game ( a loss to Buffalo), fly to Miami for the funeral and made them play on Thursday because they did not want to lose revenue.
4. Who gets the proceeds from O.J. Simpson's book, "If I did it"?

Answer: The Goldman Family

Needless to say, OJ has other problems at this moment like kidnapping and armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers. However, OJ did decide to write this book speaking "hypothetically" of course. He has pleaded not guilty to that. However, in his quest to make money off a terrible tragedy, a judge awarded all the proceeds to go to the Goldman family.

In August 2007, a Florida bankruptcy court awarded the rights to the book to the Goldman family to partially satisfy an unpaid civil judgment.

The book was revised a little and was published in September 2007.
5. Jason Giambi admitted in front of the grand jury that he injected himself with steroids.

Answer: True

This pertains to the Balco steroids case and the three main people what were asked this question were Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, and Gary Sheffield. Even though it is illegal, this information was leaked to the public. They all admitted to using steroids but Barry and Sheffield alleged that they did not know what they were taking. Giambi did confess and faced public scorn and ridicule as he has lied to the media.
6. Tragedies have been happening for a time, they just did not get the 24-7 sports/news coverage they get now. When Tonya Harding had her ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, take out her knee with a tire iron, what eventually happened to Nancy Kerrigan?

Answer: She got the silver medal

Tonya earned many an appearance on the Jerry Springer show and police blotters, but Nancy practiced, overcame the injury, and finished second to Oksana Baiul. Tonya went on to a celebrity boxing career and released a sex video.
7. Todd Bertuzzi of the Vancouver Canucks was hit with a fine and a suspension for the rest of the year and the playoffs. Who did he knock out of a game and a career to get this penalty?

Answer: Steve Moore

This hit which was a "retaliation" hit left Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche with a broken neck. His NHL career is over. Bertzzi gave a tearful apology but was back after 17 months.
8. Who was not listed on the Mitchell Report when it came out on December 13th, 2007?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

A-Rod who just signed a huge deal with the Yankees has not had the speculation of the black steroid cloud circling him.
9. Scandals are not a new thing. They just did not get the media coverage back in the day before Sports Center and the media grew to huge proportions. The infamous "Black Sox" scandal which included Shoeless Joe Jackson had the White Sox throw the World Series to whom?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

8 men were banned for life after they took the gamblers money. The eight men included the great "Shoeless" Joe Jackson; pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude "Lefty" Williams; infielders Buck Weaver, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Fred McMullin, and Charles "Swede" Risberg; and outfielder Oscar "Happy" Felsch.
10. Pete Rose was banned for life by commissioner Bart Giamatti.

Answer: True

Pete Rose did not admit it for many years but he was betting on baseball and even his own team while he was managing. The late Bart Giamatti read the Dowd Report written by John Down and Rose agreed to a lifetime banishment. Many years later, he admitted everything but "Charlie Hustle" as they called him is not in the Hall of Fame.
