Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Gable Endies

Answer: Montrose

Montrose FC were founded in 1879 in the county of Angus. The Gable Endies refers to the continental style in which the houses of the town's wealthier citizens were built, with the gable end (side) of the house facing the street.
2. The Bairns

Answer: Falkirk

Falkirk FC were formed in Stirlingshire in 1876. The club nickname comes from a moniker used for residents of the town itself - the town's motto is "Better meddle wi' the de'il than the Bairns o' Fa'kirk". In Scotland, a "bairn" is another name for a child.
3. The Honest Men

Answer: Ayr United

Ayr United were founded in 1910 by the merger of Ayr FC and Ayr Parkhouse. Their nickname comes from a line in the poem "Tam o' Shanter" by local bard Robert Burns - "Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses, For honest men and bonnie lasses".
4. The Blue Toon

Answer: Peterhead

Peterhead FC were founded in 1891, and were members of the Highland League from 1931 until 2000, when they were elected to the Scottish Football League. Their nickname is shared with the town itself, and refers to the blue clothing worn by local fishermen.
5. The Spiders

Answer: Queens Park

Queens Park are one of the oldest football clubs in the world, and the oldest in Scotland, having been founded in Glasgow in 1867. They play their home games at the National Stadium, Hampden Park, and have always maintained an amateur status. Their nickname refers to the thin black and white hoops on their jerseys which were thought to resemble a spider's web.
6. The Red Lichties

Answer: Arbroath

Arbroath FC were founded in the county of Angus in 1878. In 1885, they defeated Bon Accord FC 36-0 in a Scottish Cup tie. The town is a fishing port and the "Red Lichties" moniker refers to a red light that guided fishermen back to the town's harbour.
7. The Doonhamers

Answer: Queen of the South

Queen of the South FC were founded in the town of Dumfries in 1919. The club's name is also the nickname of the town. At one time many of the town's citizens worked away from home in Glasgow, and referred to their home town as "doon hame". The Doonhamers moniker was thus applied to people from Dumfries and was then adopted by the football club.
8. The Buddies

Answer: St Mirren

St Mirren FC were formed in the town of Paisley, Renfrewshire, in 1877. People from the town have traditionally been called "Paisley Buddies", thus the club's nickname.
9. The Bully Wee

Answer: Clyde

Clyde FC were founded in Glasgow in 1877, and took their name from the river that the city stands on. They relocated to the new town of Cumbernauld in 1994. There is some debate as to the origin of their unusual nickname, with one being that the word "bully" was used in Victorian times to refer to something that was first-rate, and the club were small in stature, thus "bully wee Clyde".
10. The Staggies

Answer: Ross County

Ross County FC were formed in the town of Dingwall, Ross & Cromarty, in 1929. They played in the Highland League until 1994, when they were admitted to the Scottish Football League. They won their first major trophy in 2016, defeating Hibernian in the final of the Scottish League Cup.

The club's nickname comes from the stag's head on the club badge, which was adopted from the regimental badge of local army battalion, The Seaforth Highlanders.
