Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Domestically, Scottish football was dominated by the "Old Firm" of Celtic and Rangers throughout most of the 20th century. Which other Glasgow club was pre-eminent in the late 19th century, winning the Scottish FA Cup 10 times?

Answer: Queens Park

Based at Scotland's national stadium, Hampden Park, Queens Park are the oldest club in Scotland, formed in 1867. They won the Scottish Cup ten times between 1874 and 1893, but the onset of professionalism saw them reduced to also-rans, as they stubbornly clung on to their amateur status.
2. Scotland was involved in the very first international match in the world. Who were their opponents in 1872?

Answer: England

The first international football match took place at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow, with all of Scotland's players coming from Queens Park FC. The game finished in a 0-0 draw. Scotland and England would play each other annually apart from during the two world wars up until 1989, when the British Championship was abandoned. Since then, meetings have been confined to when the two countries have been drawn against each other in the European Championships or World Cup.
3. The Scottish Football League was founded in 1890, and the first championship was shared by Rangers and which other club?

Answer: Dumbarton

Dumbarton and Rangers finished the 1890-91 season with equal points and, as goal difference wasn't used to separate teams in those early days, a playoff was held to decide the champions. This game ended in a draw so, for the only time in SFL history, there were co-champions.
4. In 1928, Scotland scored one of the biggest wins in their history when they thrashed England 5-1. What nickname was bestowed on that famous Scottish XI?

Answer: Wembley Wizards

Wembley Stadium in London opened in 1923. This was just the second time that the Scots had played England there. Alex Jackson scored a hat-trick with Alex James adding another two goals. England's solitary reply came from Bob Kelly with a minute left. 80,686 fans witnessed this historic win.
5. Scotland took part in the final stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1954. Their debut was an inauspicious one, including a 7-0 humiliation against which South American country?

Answer: Uruguay

Scotland qualified for the 1954 World Cup, held in Switzerland, by virtue of finishing runners-up to England in the 1953-54 British championship. Their two matches at the Finals saw them lose 1-0 to Austria, plus that 7-0 hammering by the Uruguyans.
6. In 1967, Celtic became the first British club to win the European Champions Cup. Which Italian club did they defeat in the final in Lisbon?

Answer: Inter Milan

Celtic, managed by Jock Stein, dominated Scottish football in the late 1960s and early 1970s, winning nine successive league titles and numerous domestic cups. Their crowning achievment came in Portugal, with goals by Tommy Gemmell and Steve Chalmers shocking favourites Inter Milan 2-1. That Celtic XI will always be remembered as the "Lisbon Lions".
7. At the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, Scotland finally recorded their first victory in a World Cup Finals tournament. Which African country did they defeat 2-0?

Answer: Zaire

Zaire, later renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo, were the opposition on 14th June 1974. Goals by Peter Lorimer and Joe Jordan in the first half was enough to claim victory. Unfortunately, Scotland's reluctance to chase further goals in the second half proved their undoing. Draws in the next two group matches against Brazil and Yugoslavia saw them eliminated at the group stage on goal difference. Nevertheless, Scotland was the only team in the entire tournament to finish undefeated (eventual champions West Germany lost a group game to neighbours East Germany, but still qualified for the next stage).
8. A long period of domination by the Old Firm was temporarily halted in the early 1980s, when Aberdeen and Dundee United both won the League Championship. Who was the manager of Aberdeen who led them to three league titles during this era?

Answer: Alex Ferguson

Ferguson, later to go on to dominate English football with Manchester United, was in charge at Pittodrie from 1978 until 1986. During this period they won three Championships, four Scottish FA Cups, one Scottish League Cup, and, most notably, the European Cup-Winners Cup of 1983.

They defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the final in Gothenburg. Willie Miller was club captain throughout this period.
9. The Scottish FA broke with tradition in January 2002 when they appointed a non-Scot as national team coach. Which former German international defender was this?

Answer: Berti Vogts

Vogts was a member of West Germany's 1974 World Cup-winning team, and managed the unified Germany to victory at Euro 96. His spell in charge of Scotland was an unmitigated disaster, a 2-2 draw with the Faroe Islands in September 2002 being the low point. He resigned in November 2004, and was replaced by Walter Smith.
10. Both Celtic and Rangers reached the final of the UEFA Cup in the first decade of the 21st century, but both lost. Which Portuguese and Russian teams did they lose to?

Answer: Porto & Zenit St. Petersburg

The 2003 final in Seville saw Porto defeat Celtic 3-2 in extra time. The 2008 final in Manchester ended in a 2-0 triumph for Zenit St. Petersburg over Rangers.
