Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This team changed their name from the Highlanders to which team in 1913?

Answer: Yankees

The New York Highlanders became the most famous franchise in history when they changed their name to the Yankees in 1913. Changing from Hilltop Grounds in late 1912, the new Yankee team played at Polo Grounds V under the new management of Frank Chance.

The Highlanders finished in last place in the American League in 1912 with a 50-102 record, then improved a little under Frank Chance in 1913 with a seventh place finish and a 57-94 record. The team would slowly improve and finally with the acquisition of the great Babe Ruth would win the AL pennant in 1921 but lost in the World Series to the New York Giants.

The 1922 season would see the same result, the AL pennant but a loss to the Giants in the big top again. The Yankees would change things in 1923 by defeating the Giants in the World Series four games to two which began to rewrite baseball history.
2. The 2017 Dodger organization began their National League endeavors in 1884 as the Brooklyn Atlantics. They have had many team name changes throughout history. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: Blues

The franchise spent only one season as the Atlantics before changing their team name to the Brooklyn Grays in 1885, then the Bridegrooms in 1888. From 1891-1895 they shortened their name to the Grooms, but went back to the Bridegrooms from 1896-1898. Still not knowing what to name their team they went with the Brooklyn Superbas from 1899-1910. Upon Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson taking over the franchise in 1911, he changed the name to the Brooklyn Robins until 1931 when he stepped down in lieu of Max Carey, and the franchise was named the Brooklyn Dodgers until they moved to Los Angeles in 1958.
3. This franchise was a new American League team in 1901, but changed their name for the 1902 season. It would take another 42 seasons for them to even reach the World Series. Which team was this?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

The other teams were all National League teams. The franchise began in the new American League in 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers but finished the season so poorly with no fan support that they franchise moved to St. Louis to become the Browns. Although finishing second of eight teams in 1902, the team began and continued a downward slide until they finally made it to the World Series in 1944 against crosstown rival St. Louis Cardinals.

The Browns lost the World Series four games to two. The franchise moved to Baltimore to become the Orioles in 1954.

The Orioles found their first World Series crown against the Dodgers in 1966.
4. Which of these teams never existed in Major League Baseball in the 1960s?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

The Mariners began their American League expansion endeavors in 1977 in Seattle. The franchise would lose their third ALCS series in 2001. The Padres were a National League expansion team in 1969. The Twins were a moved franchise after the 1960 season from the Washington Senators.

The Mets were a National League expansion team in 1962. They lost more than 100 games in a season five times from 1962-1967. The team would win the World Series in 1969 against the powerful Baltimore Orioles.
5. Which of these teams never made a World Series appearance in the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

Cleveland had not made a World Series appearance since 1954 when they lost to the Giants four games to none, until they finally made it in 1995 but lost to the Braves. Baltimore showed up for the 1966 World Series against the Dodgers in a win. The 1970s gave them three appearances in 1970, 1971, and 1979.

The Mets first appeared in 1969, then 1973 and again in 1986. The Yankees were the Yankees showing up five times in the 1960s, 1976-1978, then a solo appearance in 1981.
6. Which of these Major League teams had the same manager throughout the entire 1970s decade?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

Earl Weaver took over the Orioles mid-season 1968 from Hank Bauer. In the 1970s he took Baltimore to three American League pennants and won the World Series in 1970 against the Reds. His only Major League team was the Orioles. Earl was a Hall of Fame inductee. He died in January 2013 at the age of 82, and coincidentally on the same day that Hall of Fame great Stan Musial also died.
7. Which team in 2000 set a new National League record for hitting 249 home runs in the season?

Answer: Houston Astros

The Astros hit a record-breaking 249 home runs in the 2000 season led by Jeff Bagwell's 47, Richard Hidalgo's 44, and Moises Alou's 30. They still finished fourth of six teams in the Central Division of the NL with their 72-90 record. In the 2000 season when the Astros set the NL season record for home runs, they still fell short of the Seattle Mariners Major League record of 264 from 1997.
8. The Chicago Cubs set a National and Major League record by winning 116 games in 1906. Which American League team tied that season record in 2001?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

The Cubs ruled the National League from 1906-1911. They went 116-46 in 1906 to win the NL pennant but still lost to crosstown rival Chicago White Sox in the World Series four games to two. They would come back in 1907 and 1908 to win consecutive World Series titles.

The Cubbies would make seven more World Series appearances before winning it all again in 2016. The Mariners went 116-46 but didn't advance in the ALCS when they lost to the Yankees.
9. Which American League team received three AL MVP Awards on behalf of their players in the 1990s?

Answer: Texas Rangers

The Rangers were fairly hot in the latter part of the 1990s. Juan Gonzalez first won the AL MVP Award over Alex Rodriguez of the Mariners and Albert Belle of the Indians. In 1998 Gonzalez won it again over Nomar Garciaparra of the Red Sox. In 1999 Ivan 'Pudge' Rodriguez won the AL MVP over Pedro Martinez of the Red Sox, Roberto Alomar of the Indians, Manny Ramirez of the Indians, and Rafael Palmeiro of the Rangers all in a fairly close voting process.
10. Which American League team set a record in 2003 for losing 119 games in the season?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers went 43-119 in a dismal 2003 season. Alan Trammel was in his first year of managing, and believe it or not he came back for the 2004 season with a 72-90 record. Designated hitter Dmitri Young led the team with his bat at .297. Mike Maroth led the pitching staff with nine wins but lost 21 in the process.

The Tigers finished 47 games behind the pennant-winning Twins in the AL Central.
