Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Rams never regretted grabbing this offensive guard in the 1966 draft. He went to the Pro Bowl 11 times, including his final season in 1978. Who was this former college player from Michigan who wore the number 65?

Answer: Tom Mack

The others listed were all defensive backs. Mack protected such greats as Roman Gabriel, Bill Munson, John Hadl, James Harris, and even Joe Namath. Tom never went to a Super Bowl, and the Dallas Cowboys squelched his chances four times.
2. In the 1967 NFL Championship game, Green Bay QB Bart Starr provided a quarterback sneak with just seconds remaining to win the game. Credit was given to which offensive lineman who cleared the way for this historical score?

Answer: Jerry Kramer

The others were all linebackers. On the other side of Kramer's blocking was the rebounding of Dallas Cowboy Jethro Pugh. From 1958-1968, Kramer blocked for his Bart Starr in his entire career. No block was more important than the infamous block in this 1967 game. The Packers won the NFC game 21-17, then went on to defeat the Raiders 33-14 in the Super Bowl.
3. This future Boston Celtic great was taken in the seventh round of the 1962 draft. Although not playing football since high school, this Cleveland Brown was cut after only one exhibition game. Who was this player who scored more than 26,000 points in his NBA career?

Answer: John Havlicek

Havlicek was one of those multi-talented sports players, and out of Ohio State, he played in only one NFL exhibition game. Danny Ainge played baseball and basketball. Havlicek played his entire NBA career with the Boston Celtics from 1963-1978. John was a 13-season all-star with the hoops side of the house, and a NBA Hall of Fame inductee in 1983.
4. The Seattle Seahawks used a supplemental pick in the 1987 draft. They gave up their number one pick in 1988 to take this 'Hollywood Style' linebacker from Oklahoma. This linebacker turned out to be a bust. Who was he?

Answer: Brian Bosworth

Bosworth began in the NFL on a sour note. He fought the NFL to keep his number from college, but the league would not budge and made him wear the number 55 in the NFL. He carried too much baggage because of his off-field profiles that did not match his on-field performances. In 1989, a shoulder injury to Brian finished his career.
5. The first receiver to catch 80 passes in a season, this sure-handed player caught 84 in 1950 with the Rams. Who was it?

Answer: Tom Fears

The others listed made their name with their feet as they were all kickers. Tom was a wide receiver his entire career with the Rams from 1948-1956. When he caught 84 in 1950, he led the league for the third consecutive season. He caught most of his passes from the great Norm VanBrocklin and Bob Waterfield.
6. In 1966, the CBS Network was the NFL's network, and the NBC Network carried AFC games. Which network televised the first Super Bowl at the end of that season?

Answer: Both CBS and NBC

It was by a violent act by both networks, threatening lawsuits by each, that the NBC in the end claimed that CBS had a monopoly. Thus, the agreement was that both networks air the first Super Bowl.
7. This Chicago Bear running back was a threat to go all the way each time he carried the ball. Then he had knee surgery in the 1968 season, but still came back to lead the league in rushing in 1969, even though his greatest gain was 28 yards. Who was this number 40 jersey-wearing Bears running back?

Answer: Gale Sayers

Gale still rushed for a 1032 yards in 1969 to lead the league, but that was it for him. Playing in only two games in the 1970 and 1971 seasons, Sayers' career was over. He had 47 touchdowns in only seven seasons of his career. He was later a Hall of Fame inductee.
8. Two former Miami Hurricane brothers made their debut in the NFL in 1988. One, who was a wider receiver caught over 500 passes in his career. The other, a defensive back, joined up with his brother in Seattle in 1997 with the Seahawks. Who were these brothers?

Answer: Brian and Bennie Blades

The others were not brothers in the NFL. Brian played his entire 11-season career with the Seahawks. Bennie played his first nine seasons with the Detroit Lions, then in his last in 1997, was reunited with his brother. Brian retired in 1998.
9. When this team of wide receivers was short in the 1996 season, the Dallas Cowboys used an all-pro defensive back to start on offense. This was the first time since 1960 that a team had a player start on offense and defense in the same game. Who was it?

Answer: Deion Sanders

Sanders had just come from the San Francisco 49ers after the 1995 season. For Dallas in 1996, Deion, nicknamed 'Prime Time', caught 36 passes.
10. This All-American from Texas was considered by many to be the greatest linebacker that ever lived, and even superior to Dick Butkus. He was under the shadows of 11 seasons in Atlanta, thus he did not get the recognition that he deserved. Who was he?
